Note. Mahunka & Mahunka-Papp (1995) clearly states that it is a species incertae sedis, while Subías (2022) needlessly synonymized this species with Phthiracarus lentulus (C.L. Koch, 1841) .

Palaearctic (western Palaearctic, in North Europe, Macaronesia and Holo-Mediterranean areas, disjunctive), Afrotropical (central-eastern part) and South Africa

Notes. Subías (2022) considered this species as congeneric with A. monodactyla (Niedbała, 2002) . However, both species have different shape of trichobothria.

Subías (2022) considered this species as congeneric with Acrotritia wallworki (Lee, 1980) . However, mutual distance between lamellar setae is slightly longer than between rostral setae in A. wallworki but slightly shorter in A. rustica . Moreover, both species are significant geographically distanced from each other.

This species is probably conspecific with A. mahunkai Niedbała et Liu, 2018 (= A. simile (Mahunka, 1982)) as suggested by Niedbała (2011b) and Subías (2022), but some tarsi of legs are bidactylous (versus all tarsi monodactylous in A. mahunkai ).
