Diagnosis. Predominantly yellow; postcranium black, upper third shining black without pruinescence; supraalar presutural setae absent; male tergite 8 acute distally. Female without pinnate scales on legs.

This is the type-species of Macrostomus . The lectotype is deposited at ZMC. This species was redescribed and figured by Rafael & Cumming (2004), based on recently collected Amazonian specimens .

Geographical records ( Fig. 8 ). Macrostomus ferrugineus occurs in Guyana and Brazil ( Roraima, Amapá, Pará and Amazonas states). The only records south of the Amazon River are in the state of Pará in Belém and Alter do Chão ( Rafael & Cumming 2004) .

Discussion. Macrostomus ferrugineus appears close to M. fusciventris , n. sp., M. melanothorax , n. sp. and M. fuscithorax , n. sp. on the basis of male tergite 8 being acute distally. Macrostomus ferrugineus is the only known species in this species-group without supra-alar presutural setae. The female is similar to that of M. fulvithorax (Curran) , but has no pinnate scales on the hind tibia.
