Gripopteryx serrei View in CoL — Illies, 1963, p. 155. Synonym of G. cancellata View in CoL .

Gripopteryx serrei View in CoL — Zwick, 1984, p. 148. Valid species.

Gripopteryx serrei View in CoL — Froehlich, 2010, p 133. Valid species.

Diagnostic characters. General color dark brown, length of fore wing 11 mm, subgenital plate a broad apically narrowly notched plate covering part of sternum 9; hind margin of large tergum 10 extended, center of segment densely covered with short setation, paraprocts slender, with conspicuous subapical angle delimiting bare acute tips in lateral and ventral views ( Zwick 1984).

Remarks. G. serrei was based on only one female with dark wings. It was synonymized with G. cancellata by Illies (1963). Zwick (1984) redescribed the type and admitted the possibility of G. serrei being synonymous with G. cancellata . However, after analyzing the type material of G. cancellata and comparing with the redescription and pictures of Zwick (1984) we conclude that they are distinct species. In G. s e r re i the paraprocts end in bare acute tips and the subgenital plate is bilobed, against the rounded paraprocts and the straighter subgenital plate of G. cancellata .
