Caridina solamulieres sp. nov.

Caridina nilotica var. meridionalis J. Roux 1926a: 207 (partim).

Material examined. Caridina meridionalis . Type: Holotype. New Caledonia. Tiouaka Tal, coll. F. Sarasin & J. Roux, 20.8.11 (another slip, Drs. F. Sarasin & J. Roux, Mune Tiouaka 20 avec C. sp.) NMB reg. 4.VIII.c, 1♀.

Description. From female holotype. Adult s ize 25 mm. Carapace length 3.4 mm.

Rostrum ( Fig. 15 a): Slightly longer than the second segment of the antennular peduncle. 2.75 mm long. 0.8×long as carapace. Tip blunt, 13 teeth proximally leaving 0.25 of the dorsal margin unarmed distally, post orbital teeth absent. Proximal 10 teeth small and compact, distal 3 teeth comparatively larger and spaced. 4 teeth on the distal ventral margin leaving a short unarmed end distally. Formula (0) 13/4.

Antennular peduncle ( Fig. 15 a): 0.7×carapace. Stylocerite 0.7×length of basal segment. Anterolateral teeth of basal segment 0.35×second segment.

First pereiopod ( Fig. 15 b): Dactylus 1.2×palm of propodus. Chela 2×long as broad. Carpus 2.4×long as broad, with the anterior excavation.

Second pereiopod ( Fig. 15 c): Dactylus 1.4×long as palm of propodus. Chela 2.5×long as broad. Carpus 4.4×long as broad.

Third pereiopod ( Fig. 15 d, e): Dactylus 2.9×long as broad. 6 spines on dactylus (including terminal spines). Propodus 4.3×long as dactylus and 10.5×long as broad with 13 spines arranged along inner margin. Carpus 0.5×long as propodus, with 1 large spine and 3 small spines on inner margin. Merus 2.1×carpus length. Merus with 2 large spines along posterior margin.

Fifth pereiopod ( Fig. 15 f, g): Dactylus 2.5×long as broad with 56 spines in comb-like fashion on inner margin. Propodus 12×long as broad and 4.6×long as dactylus with 11 spines arranged along posterior margin. Carpus 0.5×propodus length and with 4 minute spines along inner margin. Merus 1.5×carpus length, with 2 large spines along posterior margin.

6th abdominal somite: 0.59×long as carapace.

Telson ( Fig. 15 h): Tip triangular with a median process bearing a pair of long lateral spines and 4 pairs of partially plumose intermediate spines of which the outer most are slightly shorter than the lateral spines while the rest are of equal length to the lateral spines.

Uropod ( Fig. 15 i): 11 diaeresis spinules present.

Anal carina ( Fig. 15 j): Unarmed.

Etymology. solamulieres ; a noun in apposition meaning a lonely women; referring to the fact that this species has been described from one female specimen.

Distribution. New Caledonia.

Type locality. Tiouaka Tal, New Caledonia.

Remarks. One female described from Tiouaka Tal, New Caledonia by Roux as C. meridionalis was considered to be an undescribed species, named here as C. solamulieres sp. nov.

When compared with C. meridionalis , Caridina solamulieres sp. nov. differs with respect to the mophology of the rostrum which reaches a little beyond the second segment of the antennular peduncle (vs. equal to antennular peduncle or slightly longer in C. meridionalis ), tip of the rostrum robust and blunt, (vs. pointed or bifid in C. meridionalis ), 13 teeth on the proximal dorsal margin leaving 0.25 of the dorsal margin unarmed distally (vs. 19–27 teeth on the dorsal margin up to the tip in C. meridionalis ), 4 teeth on the distal ventral margin with short distal unarmed end (vs. 4–10 teeth on the ventral margin up to the tip or with a short unarmed end distally in C. meridionalis ), no post orbital teeth (2 post orbital teeth in C. meridionalis ).

Caridina solamulieres sp. nov. differs from C. simoni with regard to the morphology of its rostrum and telson. The rostrum of C. solamulieres sp. nov. reaches a little beyond the second segment of the antennular peduncle (vs. reaching antennal scale or slightly longer in C. simoni ), tip of the rostrum robust and blunt (vs. slender and sharply pointed in C. simoni ), 13 teeth on the proximal dorsal margin leaving 0.25 of the dorsal margin unarmed distally (vs. 15–25 teeth proximal dorsal margin leaving distally 0.25–0.4 unarmed or interrupted by 1–4 teeth in C. simoni ), no post orbital teeth (vs. 3–5 post orbital teeth in C. simoni ). The posterior margin of the telson in the new species is triangular with a median process (vs. broad and rounded in C. simoni ).

The possession of a short rostrum and absence of post orbital teeth by the new species is shared with C. novaecaledoniae Roux 1926 . However, Caridina solamulieres sp. nov. differs from C. novaecaledoniae in having a rostrum that reaches beyond the second segment of the antennular peduncle (vs. mostly reaching 1/3 of second segment of antennular peduncle or shorter reaching end of the tip of eye in C. novaecaledoniae ), 13 teeth on the proximal dorsal margin leaving 0.25 of the dorsal margin unarmed distally (vs. 7–20 minute teeth on dorsal margin compactly up to the tip or with a short unarmed end in C. novaecaledoniae ), no post orbital teeth (vs. 0–3 post orbital in C. novaecaledoniae ), tip robust and blunt (vs. tip sharply pointed in C. novaecaledoniae ), 4 teeth on the distal ventral margin with short distal unarmed margin (vs. 0–5 teeth on ventral margin mostly up to the tip or with a short unarmed end in C. novaecaledoniae ). The posterior margin of telson in the new species is triangular (vs. posterior margin rounded in C. novaecaledoniae ).
