ONCHOPRISTIS NUMIDUS ( HAUG, 1905)

Diagnosis of † Onchopristidae : Sclerorhynchoid group with a peculiar rostral morphology that includes a thick lateral layer of porous cartilage on the sides of the rostral cartilages, where the enlarged denticle lateral series attach. Rostral centre and superficial ophthalmic nerve canals covered with an external layer of ‘wood-like’ cartilage. Two series of enlarged denticles with acute cap associated with the lateral regions of the rostrum and head, of which the lateral rostrum series shows smaller denticles with a round cap associated with their base. Symmetric addition of rostral denticles with denticles of different sizes being periodically added. Rostral denticles with a cap filled with orthodentine. Large denticles are associated with the body [also see: Sternes & Shimada (2019) for † Ischyrhiza ].
