Idiostolus insularis (Berg, 1883)

1969: Schaefer & Wilcox, 498 [ Argentina: Tierra del Fuego, distribution, description of second and four instar, descriptive notes]. Note: The localities Los Muermos and Puyehue, Osorno given in this paper as Argentinean records belong really to Chilean localities. This is probably due to some relabeling mistakes in the material examined in that series by collection curators, as was noted by Carvajal & Faúndez (2011). Additionally, Schaefer & Wilcox (1969) described an “aberrant” specimen from Viamonte, Argentina (probably Viamonte in Tierra del Fuego). This specimen belongs to an undescribed species that the authors did not formally named as a different taxon, because of the bad condition of the only specimen available. This specimen is also different from the recently described Idiostolus schaeferi Faúndez, Carvajal & Ashworth, 2014 from Chile.

Remarks: Although Idiostolidae is currently represented only by I. insularis in Argentina, there is at least one undescribed species (the Viamonte specimen mentioned above), and it is highly probable that I. schaeferi is also present in the country. Thus, the number of taxa within this family for Argentina should increase in the future.

Even though Coscarón’s catalogue had a cut-off date of 2014 (Coscarón, 2017); the only work published after 2014 pertaining to Andean Idiostolidae is a paper describing a teratological case in I. insularis from Magallanes ( Chile) (Carvajal & Faúndez, 2016). Therefore, with the additions and annotations here provided, the catalog part for this family can be considered up-to-date.
