status

Melpomene paradoxa Lehnert, Amer. Fern J. View in CoL 98: 235, f. 33. 2008.

Range: — Peru and Bolivia (CO, LP).

Ecology: —Fairly common; epiphytic in moss cushions, moist montane forests and elfin forests; 2800–3900 m.

Notes: —Most similar to M. flabelliformis and M. moniliformis , agreeing with the former in size of rhizomes, internode length, and rhizome scales, but closer to the latter in scale color, laminar shape, and hair distribution. Melpomene paradoxa lacks hairs between the sori—a character typical of M. flabelliformis . According to Lehnert (2013), M. paradoxa has no more taxonomic value than recognized varieties of both of the presumed relatives, but since it cannot be placed with confidence under either, it was accorded species rank until its status could be clarified. Lehnert speculated that M. paradoxa , as well as M. caput-gorgonis and M. flagellata , could represent different recombinations of hybrid swarms between M. flabelliformis and M. moniliformis .
