ETYMOLOGY. — The genus “ Fransinea ” is named after the Italian mathematician Miguel Franzini ( c. 1730-1810), who was one of Feijó’s professors at the University of Coimbra and a friend of Vandelli. Recruted during the Pombal reform period, Franzini taught mathematics ( Monteiro 1949; Correia 1954). The epithet “ insulana ” indicates the insular origins of the species.
ECOLOGY. — Plant lignified, occupying arid terrain.
COMMON NAME. — “ Campainhas ” is the common name in Portuguese to designate the bellflowers, name no longer used in Cabo Verde.
