TYPE SPECIES. — By original designation: Abdobalistum thyrsus n. gen., n. sp. Early to middle Eocene from Monte Bolca, Italy. Only known species. Holotype by monotypy: NHML P 9830 View Materials ( Fig. 4C, D View FIG ).

MATERIAL EXAMINED. — Holotype of Abdobalistum thyrsus n. gen, n. sp. (complete, moderately well preserved). Only known specimen. This is the specimen figured by Heckel (1856: pl. X) in his redescription of Palaeobalistum orbiculatum Blainville, 1818 . It was erroneously designed by Blot (1987: 88-91) as the “type = lectotype ” of “ Palaeobalistum orbiculatum ” (see under Palaeobalistum below).
