Consequently, Rallus minutus has been used previously at least three times, with different meaning, two as invalid junior homonyms, and all are synonyms of other taxa: Rallus minutus Gmelin 1789 [= Hapalocrex flaviventer (Boddaert 1783) ], Rallus minutus Pallas 1811 [= Zapornia pusilla (Pallas, 1776) ], Rallus minutus JR Forster 1844 [= Zapornia tabuensis (JF Gmelin 1789)], and thus is an unavailable name. We thus propose a new name for the rail from São Jorge: Rallus nanus Alcover, Pieper, Pereira and Rando , nomen novum
