Eosentomon udagawai Imadaté, 1961b: 136 , pl. 3, figs. 1–9; Tuxen, 1964: 147, figs. 185–187; Imadaté, 1974b: 297, figs. 155– 157.
Specimens examined. The holotype was not found in the collection of NSMT. Therefore, I examined some specimens identified by the late Dr. Imadaté as E. udagawai in NSMT: NSMT – Ap 6, 1 male, Asakawa , Tokyo, 13-X- 1966, K. Niijima leg. ; 1 female, 28-IV-1971 (Imadaté’s Proturan Collection No. 0176a 3-39), 1 female, 30-VIII- 1971 (No. 0176a 3-60), 1 female, 17-X-1971 (No. 0176a 3-89), 1 male, 1 female, 28-IV-1981 (No. 0176a 3-36), Asakawa (type locality), Tokyo, G. Imadaté leg.
Remarks. Imadaté (1974b) recorded the chaetotaxic variation in this species and noted that the empodium of the middle tarsus was nearly 1/3 of claw length, while Tuxen (1964) stated it was short. Imadaté (1977) considered E. udagawai to be a polymorphic species, but he did not mention the details of characters that led to this conclusion. Imadaté (1974b) and Tuxen (1964) both stated that E. udagawai lacked labral setae. However, the specimens examined here all possessed labral setae. They all had long empodial appendages on the hind tarsi (except one specimen) and foretarsal sensillum b'1 was close to δ 3' as in E. udagawai . It is likely that these specimens comprised a species complex that was treated as the polymorphic “ E. udagawai . ” However, such characters as the labral setae and the empodia of middle and hind tarsi are stable, so they should be considered as good taxonomic characters. Therefore, “ E. udagawai ” has been divided into several new species and described in this paper.
Distribution. Japan (Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, Okushiri, Sado, Oki, Okinawa, Miyako, Ishigaki, Iriomote, Izu–Ohshima, Miyakejima, Hachijojima and Ogasawara Islands), Korea and Taiwan.
