Distribution. Western Atlantic— Bermuda, Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea to Brazil (Fernando de Noronha, Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Alagoas, Sergipe, Bahia, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina) ( Provenzano 1959; Coelho & Ramos-Porto 1987; Rieger & Giraldi 1997; Rieger 1998; Melo 1999; Coelho-Filho 2006; Coelho et al. 2007; Felder et al. 2009).
Remarks. Molecular analysis revealed different color patterns observed in individuals of C. tibicen were to be intraspecific variation ( Mandai et al. 2018a). In addition, a recent phylogeographic study ( Mandai et al. 2018b) showed that its extensive western Atlantic distribution has a hiatus in the Amazon Delta (Brazilian states of Pará and Amapá). Indeed, genetic structure was detected, defining two distinct groups (North and South Atlantic Ocean), with no morphological distinction. Sequences accession numbers (GenBank): CCDB 769—16S ( KT897493 View Materials ), COI ( KT897527 View Materials ) ( Mandai et al. 2018b).
