Distribution. Western Atlantic— USA (Florida), Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea to Brazil (Piauí, Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Pernambuco, Alagoas, Bahia, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Santa Catarina) ( Coelho & Ramos-Porto 1987; Rieger 1998; Coelho et al. 2007; Felder et al. 2009; Nucci & Melo 2011).
Remarks. Molecular and morphological analyses supported the differentiation between C. sclopetarius and the congener and sympatric species C. symmetricus , previously distingued based only on their color pattern ( Negri et al. 2012).
