Distribution. Western Atlantic— Bermuda, USA (Florida), Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, Venezuela, Brazil (Fernando de Noronha, Pernambuco, Alagoas, Sergipe, Bahia, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina) ( Coelho & Ramos-Porto 1987; Mantelatto & Souza-Carey 1998; Rieger 1998; Melo 1999; Strasser & Price 1999; Coelho-Filho 2006; Felder et al. 2009; Fransozo et al. 2011; Lemaitre & Tavares 2015).

Remarks. Different color patterns among specimens of Pagurus brevidactylus throughout its distribution diverge from those reported by Provenzano (1959) and McLaughlin (1975), which indicates the possible presence of cryptic species under this name ( Lemaitre & Tavares 2015). A preliminary molecular phylogeny revealed close relationship among South American species of the “ provenzanoi ” clade, including P. brevidactylus ( Olguín & Mantelatto 2013) .
