Distribution. Western Atlantic— Bermuda, USA (Connecticut, North Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Louisiana, Texas), Gulf of Mexico, Mexico, Bahamas, Belize, Costa Rica, Panama, Cuba, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, Colombia, Venezuela, Brazil (Fernando de Noronha, Pará, Maranhão, Piauí, Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Alagoas, Sergipe, Bahia, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina); Eastern Atlantic— Ascension Island, Gibraltar, Senegal, Angola; Eastern Pacific—from Gulf of California to Ecuador (Galapagos Islands), Peru ( Haig 1956, 1960; Gore & Abele 1976; Ramos-Porto et al. 1978; Werding 1982; Coelho-Santos & Coelho 1994; Melo 1999; Werding et al. 2003; Coelho et al. 2007; Mantelatto et al. 2011; Ferreira & Melo 2016; Hiller & Lessios 2017).

Remarks. Petrolisthes armatus is an euryhaline species that inhabits mangrove regions, living on root branches of Rhizophora sp. and Avicenia sp. and in small lagoons. It is also found in the intertidal region, under rocks, on corals, sponges, reefs built by Phragmatopoma caudata Krøyer in Mörch, 1863, mussel beds and oysters down to 60 m depth ( Werding 1977, 1982; Veloso & Melo 1993; Micheletti-Flores & Negreiros-Fransozo 1999; Hollebone & Hay 2007, 2008; Macedo et al. 2012). Recent studies have reported that P. armatus is not a species complex but a single species with large distribution and high variability ( Mantelatto et al. 2011; Hiller & Lessios 2017). In addition, it has been cited as an invasive species, expanding its distribution by in advertent transportation alongside oysters and seed clams for use in the aquaculture industry ( Knott et al. 2000; Wassick et al. 2017; Mack et al. 2019). Sequences accession numbers (GenBank): CCDB 1747—16S ( HM352475 View Materials ), CCDB 5185—COI ( MF490061 View Materials ) ( Mantelatto et al. 2011, 2018).
