Distribution. Western Atlantic— USA (North Carolina, Florida), Gulf of Mexico, Mexico, Panama, Puerto Rico, Martinique, Barbados, Colombia, Venezuela, Brazil (Ceará, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Alagoas, Sergipe, Bahia, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo) ( Coelho & Ramos-Porto 1980; Werding et al. 2003; Rodríguez et al. 2005; Coelho-Filho 2006; Coelho et al. 2007; Poupin & Lemaitre 2014; Ferreira & Melo 2016; Mendonça et al. 2019).

Remarks. This species is found on rocks, corals, sponges and calcareous algae, down to depths of 54 m ( Ferreira & Melo 2016). According to Williams (1984), it occurs from shore to 171 m depth. Most of the specimens in São Paulo were collected with colonies of bryozoan S. errata .
