The protologues and type specimens of Eugenia expansa View in CoL , E. cuprea View in CoL , E. grandisepala View in CoL and E. grazielae View in CoL largely overlap, especially regarding the remarkable character of the cupreous and velutinous indumentum of young leaves, that suggested to us that these names could be united under a single species. The caudate apex of the leaves and the cupreous aspect of the flowers are also features that help to identify this species and to easily separate it from other species of section Phyllocalyx . Although this species has been widely filed in herbaria under Eugenia cuprea View in CoL , its correct name is Eugenia expansa View in CoL —another long overlooked name in the same fashion of E. membranifolia View in CoL (see Bünger et al. 2014).

Eugenia expansa occurs in the states of Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Paraná in coastal Atlantic forests and maritime scrubs on sandy soil (restingas). Eugenia expansa is widely distributed but grows in very small populations.
