( Figs 5A–5E View FIGURE 5 , 6A–6E View FIGURE6 )

Diagnosis. Following Braet and van Achterberg’s (2003) key to Neotropical species of Pambolus , P. chinanteco runs both to P. hemitaeniatus van Achterberg and P. micropennis van Achterberg. However , this new species can be distinguished from the latter two by having a smooth mesoscutum (distinctly granulate in P. hemitaeniatus , superficially granulate and partly smooth in P. micropennis ), at least basal 22 flagellomeres brown to dark brown (14th to 23rd white in P. hemitaeniatus , 13th to 18th white in P. micropennis ), and the slightly striate-granulate area around stemmaticum (superficially coriaceous in P. hemitaeniatus , smooth in P. micropennis ). Pambolus chinanteco sp. n. can also be distinguished from P. micropennis by the brown apex of hind femur, which contrasts with remainder of femur (apex of hind femur brownish, hardly contrasting with remainder of femur in P. micropennis ).

Description. Female. Body 3.2 mm long ( Fig. 5A View FIGURE 5 ). Colour. Head dark brown. Escape and pedicel brown. First to 16th flagellomeres dark brown, 17th to 22nd brown. Palpi white; gena, clypeus and labrum brown. Pronotum, propleuron and metasoma black; mesoscutum dark brown. Spine of propodeum black, brown apically. Coxae, trochanters and trochantelli white; femora black, brown basally; tibiae brown; first to fourth tarsomeres light brown, fifth tarsomere and tarsal claw brown. Wings hyaline, pterostigma and veins brown except vein r–m, 1cu–a (cu–a) and junction of veins 2SR (2RS) and 2M (2–M), which are not pigmented. First tergite black basally, remaining area and metasomal tergites brown, lightening so the last three terga honey yellow. Ovipositor brown, sheaths dark brown.

Head. Antenna broken, with 22 flagellomeres remaining. First flagellomere 2.5 × longer than broad apically, further flagellomeres gradually shortening so that last flagellomere 2.0 × longer than broad. Head in dorsal view transverse, 1.3 × longer than broad, eye receded, 0.7 × as long as temple. Face sparsely setose. Occiput excavated. Ocelli elliptic, POL: OD: OOL as 9:4:15. Eye in lateral view nearly round, 1.1 × wider than high, eye 0.8 × wider than temple. Hypostomal and occipital carinae not meeting. Oral opening elliptic, 2.5 × wider than higher. Face transversely striate–slightly rugulose, temple polished, frons around ocellar field slightly striate-granulose, vertex with small medial horizontal striations, otherwise smooth ( Fig. 5B View FIGURE 5 ). Six maxillar and four labial palpi.

Mesosoma. 1.5 × longer than high (lateral view); pronotum rugose, coriaceous dorsally, pronotal furrow smooth scrobiculate; propleuron smooth, slightly rugose. Notauli wide, deep, scrobiculate, not joining, reaching the end of mesoscutum in a slightly rugose area. Mesoscutal lobes smooth, sparsely setose, slightly rugose longitudinally on the edges ( Fig. 5D View FIGURE 5 ). Scutellar sulcus long, with six carinae. Scutellar disc smooth, sparsely setose. Propodeum slightly rugulose, medial smooth area anteriorly, with long and narrow basal areola; pair of lateral spines shorter than basitarsus of fore leg, slender and curved. Precoxal sulcus wide, deep and scrobiculate running along almost two-thirds length of mesopleuron. Mesopleuron rugulose dorsally, remaining area smooth.

Legs. Hind femur 3.6 × longer than broad medially. Hind basitarsus slightly longer than tarsomeres 2–4 combined. Second tarsomere 2.0 × longer than broad. Tarsal claws setose, with a basal lobe, not pectinate.

Wings. Fore wing: Fore wing 0.8 × as long as body. Pterostigma 5.7 × longer than broad and issuing r distally from its middle, r 0.3 × as long as width of pterostigma. Second submarginal 3.0 × longer than broad, 2–SR (2RS) 1.2 × longer than 3RSa (3–SR), 3RSb (4–SR) straight, reaching tip of wing and 3.3 × longer than 3RSa (3–SR). 1M (1–M) 1.4 × longer than m–cu (1m –cu). Parallel vein 2CUb (CU1a) interstitial to vein 1CU (2–CU1). 1cu–a postfurcal to 1M (1–M).—Hind wing: m–cu present, in right wing interstitial and in left wing postfurcal.

Metasoma. About as long as head and mesosoma combined. First tergite strongly broadening posteriorly, 0.8 × as broad as long medially, striate, lateral areas striate basally, otherwise smooth ( Fig. 5E View FIGURE 5 ). Remaining tergites polished. Ovipositor sheath in lateral view 0.6 × as long as fore tarsomeres 1–4 combined. Posterior end of ovipositor finely serrate.

Male. Body 2.5 mm long ( Fig. 6A View FIGURE6 ). Antenna longer than body, with 30 flagellomeres, all dark brown. Frons around ocellar field and vertex smooth, slightly striate near scape. Scape and pedicel honey yellow; head chestnut brown. Pronotum, mesopleuron, mesoscutum, spines of propodeum and propodeum dark brown. Metasoma dark brown. Mesoscutum smooth ( Fig. 6C View FIGURE6 ). First tergite striate, long and broadening posteriorly, remaining tergites completely smooth ( Fig. 6.E View FIGURE6 ); lateral areas smooth. Coxae and trochanters white, femora, tibiae and tarsi 1–4 light brown, 5th tarsomeres and tarsal claws dark brown.

Etymology. The specific epithet refers to one of the indigenous groups that inhabits Comaltepec, Oaxaca.
