Diagnosis. Stomopogon nigrisquama sp. nov. is the only species that has brown halter and dark calypter.

Etymology. The specific epithet, nigrisquama , refers to the brownish calypter.

Description

Holotype male. Length: Body: 2.5 mm. Wing: 2.6 mm.

Head ( Fig. 23B ). Frontal vitta, fronto-orbital plate, face, parafacial and gena silvery pruinose. Eye with small and sparse white cilia. Antenna dark brown; arista enlarged at base with hairs shorter than diameter of the base, apical third bare. 4 frontal setae, the second one shorter than the others and the last one reclinate; 1 proclinate orbital seta; 1 upper orbital seta; ocellar seta well developed; postocellar seta divergent with same ocellar seta length; inner vertical seta parallel subequal in length of ocellar seta. Proboscis shiny dark brown. Palpus dark brown.

Thorax. Grey, light brown pruinose. Acrostichal setae 3+5; 7 anepisternal setae.

Legs ( Fig. 23A ). Dark brown. Claws and pulvilli reduced. Fore femur with a complete pd and pv rows of setae. Fore tibia with 1 p median seta; preapical setae on d, p and pv. Mid femur with a series of long setae on a, av and pv; 1 preapical seta on p. Mid tibia with 1 p median seta; 1 apical setae on a, av, d, p, pd and v. Hind femur with a row of setae on a, ad, av, v and pv; 1 preapical seta on p. Hind tibia with many long fine setae on all surfaces, the 3 ad and 3 pd stronger than others; 1 preapical setae on a, ad, d, pd and v.

Abdomen ( Fig. 23C ). Dark brown, greyish pruinose; with a pair of brown spots on second to fourth visible tergites. Sternite 5 U-shaped, covered with curled and long setae in the apical half ( Fig. 4D ).

Terminalia ( Fig. 4 E–F). Cercus longer than wide, apically medium bifurcate; surstylus covered with many short setae ( Fig. 2D ); hypandrium long tubular; phallapodeme more or less the same diameter in all extension and bigger than hypandrium; pregonite with 2 setulae ( Fig. 2D ) and longer than postgonite; postgonite with 4 setulae ( Fig. 2D ).

Female ( Fig. 24 A–E). Length (n=16): Body: 3.0-3.5 mm; Wing: 2.7-3.3 mm. Similar to male, except for wing lighter; hind tibia with only 3 ad and 3 pd setae, 2 of them supramedian and one submedian.

Distribution. Ecuador (Zamora-Chinchipe), Peru (Cuzco).
