COMMENT: Considered a distinct family by Packard, 1967, in Anderson and Jones, p. 278-280, and Cabrera, 1961:546; but also see Ellerman, 1940:158, Landry, 1957, Univ. Calif. Publ. Zool., 56:1 -118, Pasqual et al., 1965, Ameghiniana, 4: 19-30, and Reig, 1970, J. Mammal., 51: 592-601, who placed it as a subfamily of Octodontidae .
