Cryptophleps buttikeri View in CoL sp. nov.

( Figs 7–8 View FIGURES 1 – 8 )

Type material. HOLOTYPE ♂, Saudi Arabien, W. Buttiker / Bahara [Bahrah; 21º26’N, 39º29’E], 14.6.1976 ( BMNH). PARATYPES: 2 ♀, same label ( BMNH).

Additional material (damaged). 1 ♂, same data as in holotype ( ZIN); 1 ♂, Saudi Arabia, W. Buttiker / [Jeddah,] Selouly's Farm, 30.10.75 ( BMNH).

Diagnosis. Face broad in both sexes, about as high as wide in middle, narrowed in middle and bulging below in male, nearly parallel-sided in female; antenna black; wing vein dm-cu present; halter yellow; legs yellow except apical tarsomeres brownish. The new species is close to C. rothi , differing in smaller size and in morphology as follows: M1+2 ending distinctly behind wing apex ( Fig. 7 View FIGURES 1 – 8 ); fore coxa and femur bearing simple setae, the same as on hind femur; hind tibia less bristly (2–3 anterodorsal and 3 dorsal setae); phallus filiform in distal part. Cryptophleps rothi has M1+2 ending at wing apex; fore coxa and femur bearing flattened setae; hind tibia more bristly (3–4 anterodorsal and 5 dorsal setae); phallus almost equal in diameter to apex, distinctly modified at extreme apex.

Etymology. The species is named after Wilhelm Buttiker, who collected the types.

Description. Male: Similar to C. namibica sp. nov. in all respects, except for the following features: Head: antenna black; postpedicel rounded, as long as high; arista-like stylus blackish, dorsal, 4 times longer than antennomeres combined; length ratio of scape to pedicel to postpedicel to stylus (segments 1 and 2): 3/3/ 6/6/46; face slightly narrowed at middle, about as high as wide at lower margin; palpus slightly shorter than height of face, pale yellow; proboscis narrow, half as long as palpus. Legs: mostly yellow, hind coxa grey basally, mid coxa mainly grey, tarsi brownish apically; fore coxa and femur bearing fine non-flattened setae, same as on hind femur; fore femur simple, with ventral row of sparse setae, half as long as femur height, fore tibia without distinct setae; mid femur with anteroventral and posteroventral rows of setae, about as long as femur height, mid tibia with 2 pairs of dorsal setae, with 2–3 strong apicoventral setae; hind femur with double ventral row of setae in distal half, about as long as femur height, hind tibia simple, with short dorsal and strong apical setae. Femur, tibia and tarsomere (from first to fifth) length ratio (in mm): fore leg: 0.67/0.54/0.24/0.08/0.08/0.07/0.07, mid leg: 0.63/0.34/0.16/0.11/ 0.09/0.08, hind leg: 0.73/0.76/0.31/0.16/0.13/0.09/0.09. Wing ( Fig. 7 View FIGURES 1 – 8 ): 2.3 times longer than wide; crossvein dm– cu present, faint. Ratio of costal sections beginning from humeral vein (in mm): 0.53/0.45/0.28, ratio of vein M sections to dm–cu to distal part of CuA1 (in mm): 0.73/0.54/0.08/0.67. Male terminalia: hypopygium ( Fig. 8 View FIGURES 1 – 8 ) small, partly concealed; epandrial lobe elongate rectangular, with 2 long apical setae and with long narrow midventral process bearing apical seta; phallus long and thin, filiform in distal part; epandrial lobe large, subtriangular, with 3 short setae; surstylus bilobate; ventral lobe of surstylus gradually narrowed towards apex, bearing some short setae at apex, one longish dorsal seta; dorsal lobe narrow, straight, more than ½ as long as ventral lobe, bearing 2 short apical setae; postgonite bilobate, more than half as long as surstylus; cercus small, rounded, bearing long setae. Measurements: body length: 1.6 mm, antenna length: 0.6 mm, wing length: 1.7 mm, wing width: 0.6 mm. Female: similar to male except clypeus low and broad, distinct; palpus rhomboid, 2 times longer than height of clypeus, yellow, greyish pollinose, with short pale hairs; tarsi with claws; ovipositor divided into two acanthophorites, each bearing 3 strong setae in addition to simple lateral seta. Measurements: body length: 1.7 mm, wing length: 1.8 mm.
