Black Bobtail Eel. To 16 cm (6.3 in) TL ( Kamikawa 2017). Circumglobal; western Pacific Ocean north to Japan (Aizawa in Nakabo 2002); north end of Vancouver Island (50°33’N, 129°14’W) ( Hanke et al. 2014) to Chile ( Pequeño 1989). Mesopelagic and bathypelagic; depth: 100 m or less to 5,100 m (328–16,728 ft) (min.: Personal communication: Scripps Institution of Oceanography Fish Collection, La Jolla, California; max.: Grey 1956).
