Cinclus cinclus View in CoL var. rufiventris Hemprich & Ehrenberg, 1833: 54 View in CoL [Nomen nudum; no description or indication.] Cinclus rufiventris Tristram, 1884: 51 .

Now. Cinclus cinclus rufiventris Tristram, 1884 View in CoL . See Vaurie (1951b, 1959b: 196) and Dickinson (2003: 698).

Type series. Tristram (1884: 51) did not define the type series, but specifically referred to bird(s) labeled by Hemprich and Ehrenberg (1833) as rufiventris , and to a bird listed by Sharpe (1881: 314) as a variant of cashmeriensis. Hemprich and Ehrenberg collected only one rufiventris ( Lichtenstein 1825, Nr. 28). The type series thus consists of two specimens listed below.

Syntype. ZMB 3321, skin, collected by Hemprich and Ehrenberg on an unknown date [= 5–24 July 1824] at “Bischerre” ( Lichtenstein 1825, Nr. 28) [= Bcharré, Lebanon],

Syntype. BMNH 1864.11.22.129, ad. 3, collected by Tristram on “Nahr el Kelb” ( Sharpe 1881: 314; R. Prÿs- Jones in litt. 2009) [= Nahr el Kalb, Lebanon; river opening at 33.96°N, 35.60°E], possibly during 19–20 June 1864 (cf. Tristram 1865: 633–635).

Type locality. Tristram (1884: 51) reported that C. rufiventris is confined to “the mountain streams in the deep gorges of the Litany river [= Nahr el Lîtâni, Lebanon; opening at 33.33°N, 35.24°E] and the Lebanon [= Jabal Lubnān, Lebanon]”, specifying that they were common on the “springs of Afka” [= Afqa, Lebanon; 34.07°N, 35.89°E], which he visited on 18 June 1864 ( Tristram 1865: 633). Nevertheless, the type locality is defined by collecting localities of syntypes ( ICZN 1999, Art. 76.1). We thus restrict here the type locality to Bcharré, Lebanon (Hemprich and Ehrenberg specimen) and Nahr el Kalb, Lebanon (Tristram specimen).

Remarks. Tristram (1884: 51) described the subspecies explicitly using the name rufiventris created by Hemprich and Ehrenberg (1833: 54). The name is a pure nomen nudum in the latter paper, so Tristram (1884: 51) is its author in the sense of the Code ( ICZN 1999, Art. 51.1).
