Scolotosus centrolobii Flechtmann and Keifer , n. sp.

( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 )

Scolotosus centrolobii Flechtmann & Keifer *, 1971: 34. Nomen nudum. S. centrolobii, Amrine et al., 2003: 84 . Nomen nudum. *HH Keifer in memoriam.

Female (n = 5). 180µm–200µm long, 50µm–56µm thick; body elongate-fusiform, widest across cephalothoracic [prodorsal] shield, tapering to rear; color in life probably light yellow. Rostrum 20 µm long, projecting down; antapical rostral seta 3µm long. Shield 40µm long, 53µm wide, very convex in lateral view and semiglobular in dorsal view. Shield surface with numerous small pits. Anterior shield lobe acute in lateral view, short, projecting over rostrum base. Shield with round projection in center front which has three longitudinal low ridges; median shield line present on rear half; admedian lines obscured by general confused surface pattern, represented by lateral anterior ridges over front, meeting outcurved lines at just before center, and forming convex subparallel lines at side of median line to rear. A submedian line on each side of the shield, curving back from base of anterior convexity, and then extending back as outwardly concave line toward inner side of dorsal tubercle. Shield with upper and lower longitudinal lines on side. Dorsal tubercles moved laterally, on rear margin, 38µm apart; dorsal setae 9µm long, projecting divergently to rear. Foreleg [leg I] 29µm long; tibia 6.5µm long, with 5µm seta at 1/3; tarsus 6µm long; claw 6µm long; featherclaw [empodium] 5-rayed, simple. Hindleg [leg II] 26µm long, tibia 5µm long, tarsus 6µm long, claw 7µm long. Coxae compact, ornamented with some curved lines; sternal line short, thick, ending between second coxal tubercles. First setiferous coxal tubercles ahead of second and slightly farther ahead anterior end of sternal line; second setiferous tubercles a little ahead of third. Thanosome [opisthosoma] with tergites and sternites of equal width, forming equal rings around body. About 21 thanosomal rings [opisthosomal annuli up to dorsal of seta f1]. Each ring circled by a ring of small spines ahead of rear margin. Thanosome [opisthosoma] with middorsal ridge, or series of lobes, and a lateral series of lobes, which fade to telosome (caudal part of opisthosoma). Lateral lobes start just behind dorsal tubercles. Spines tending to be larger and stronger on lobes, smallest ventrally. Lateral seta 12µm long, on ring 3 behind shield; first ventral seta 38µm long, on ring 8; second ventral seta 9µm long, on ring 13. Telosome [opisthosoma, caudad of seta f1] with 5 rings, which are rather broad, microtubercles fine, on or near ring margins, elongate below. Telosomal [caudal] seta 9µm long. Accessory seta 3µm long. Female genitalia 21µm wide, 13µm long; coverflap with fine, obscure, longitudinal lines; seta 10µm long.

Type locality. Piracicaba, São Paulo, Brazil.

Collected. 1970 by C.H.W. Flechtmann.

Host. Centrolobium robustum Mart. (Leguminosae) .

Relation to host. Leaf vagrant.

Type material. Holotype female and 4 female paratypes, on one microscopic preparation in the collection of Departamento de Entomologia e Acarologia, ESALQ – Universidade de São Paulo, Piracicaba, São Paulo, Brazil; a paratype slide, and mites in liquid retained by Keifer.
