Remarks. Valid species described from Australia ( King 1853a), redescribed by Dumont & Silva-Briano (2000) and placed in a separate genus Karualona Dumont & Silva-Briano, 2000 . More than one species may be present, even in Australia, under this name ( Shiel & Dickson 1995) and it is likely that undescribed species exist also in this genus in the region. Similar forms to K. karua are found in the Oriental zone (Van Damme et al. 2010), and they need to be revised. In their checklist, Raghunathan & Suresh Kumar (2003) surprisingly represented both Alona karua (King) and Biapertura karua (King) as separate taxa, an obvious mistake.

Distribution. Australia, Oriental zone (Van Damme et al. 2010), Afrotropical ( Smirnov 2008) and Neotropical ( Elías-Gutiérrez et al. 2006, 2008) zones. Worldwide records need to be revised in detail, as separate names are available in different regions (e.g., Karualona Mülleri in Neotropics; Sinev & Hollwedel, 2005), and even within the Oriental/Australian region. New species related to K. karua have been found recently in neighboring countries and could be found also in India (SP and KVD, unpubl. data).

Karualona kwangsiensis ( Jiang 1963)

Indian records. Tripura —Venkataraman (1995b, 1999a); West Bengal — Venkataraman & Das (1993), Venkataraman (1998c, 1999c); General record— Raghunathan & Suresh Kumar (2003).

Remarks. This species was described from China ( Jiang 1963) and later listed as a junior synonym of Karualona karua (King) (Dumont & Silva-Briano 2000; Van Damme et al. 2010). Venkataraman (1995b) reported this species from Tripura without any illustration and claimed that it is the first record of Alona kwangsiensis Chiang from India, while Venkataraman & Das (1993) already recorded this species from West Bengal. Raghunathan & Suresh Kumar (2003) in their checklist erroneously counted Alona kwangsiensis Chiang and Biapertura kwangsiensis (Chiang) as two separate taxa.
