rufipes Linné, 1758: 423 ( Staphylinus ; [Note: Nomen dubium; De Geer (1774: 24) is listed as the author of rufipes by nearly all authors; however, De Geer attributed the species to Linné. The species cited by De Geer is a misidentification of signatus according to uted rufipes to De Geer; after that nearly all authors did so. Before 1839 rufipes was variously attributed to Linné, Fabricius, De Geer, Paykull, and Gravenhorst. All citations that attributed rufipes to De Geer or Gravenhorst are listed herein under signatus as misidentifications. All the British records of rufipes are misidentifications of signatus since rufipes does not occur there (Tottenham, 1949: 425; Pope, 1977: 33). For other works prior to Erichson, the species intended is unclear, so all those citations are listed with rufipes Linné. It should be noted that Westwood wrote in 1845 that he had examined the Linnean specimens of rufipes ]; Type locality: Europa).
