15. Cryptocanthon montebello Cook View in CoL sp.nov.

( Figs. 84–88 View Figs )

Material Examined. Four specimens (3 males, 1 female).

Type Material. Holotype: ‘‘ MEXICO: Chiapas, Lagos / de Montebello, Cinco Lagos / 1,500 m, 22.IX.1992, 92-113 / R.S. Anderson, liquidamber / oak/pine forest litter’’ ( CMNC) male . Paratypes: (3) same data as holotype ( CMNC) 1 male ; ‘‘ Chiapas, Lagunas / de Montebello, Cinco Lagos / 1,500 m, 21.IX.1991 / R.Anderson, oak/pine / liquidamber forest, 91-115’’ ( CMNC) 1 male, 1 female .

Etymology. The epithet ‘‘montebello,’’ a noun in apposition, refers to the type locality of this species, Lagunas de Montebello, Chiapas.

Diagnosis. This species is distinguished by the following combination of characters: vertical surface of clypeus not foveate; pronotal hypomeron carinate; elytra strongly convex dorsally; inflexed portion of elytron with basal fovea; metathoracic wings greatly reduced; pygidium slightly, evenly convex; paramere apices broadly truncate ( Fig. 87 View Figs ).

Description. Holotype. Male. Total length 4.6 mm; greatest width 2.6 mm. Head. Clypeus not strongly produced anteriorly ( Fig. 85 View Figs ). Clypeal teeth moderately developed, widely separated, strongly reflexed. Clypeal emargination evenly rounded; vertical surface slightly, broadly V-shaped, not foveate. Apical margin of clypeus lateral to teeth weakly sinuate. Disc of clypeus concave, with irregularly spaced medium-sized punctures. Clypeogenal suture vaguely indicated near anterior margin by raised area. Gena not produced, with slight angle at junction with anterior margin of clypeus. Vertex and gena with medium-sized, dense punctures. Pronotum. Convex medially, laterally explanate, shallow depressions laterally in posterior half; with shallow median longitudinal depression very slightly indicated in posterior half. Anterior angles approximately right-angled. Sides anterior to lateral angles nearly straight; slightly sinuate posterior to lateral angles. Posterior angles obtusely rounded, not incised. Pronotum densely punctate; punctures medium-sized anteromedially; posteriorly and laterally, punctures large, annulate; setae fine, recumbent. Pronotal hypomeron convex, coarsely punctate, with posterolateral longitudinal carina. Elytra. Transversely and longitudinally strongly convex; in posterior view, moderately angulate at suture; lateral carinae moderately elevated. Each elytron dorsally with seven striae, first six indicated by two feeble wavy lines, seventh vaguely indicated along edge of dorsal carina. Elytral intervals convex; each interval with row of closely spaced, very fine setose punctures on each side adjacent to striae; setae short, pale, strongly arched. Inflexed portion of elytron moderately broad, dorsally slightly concave at apex, with scattered, fine setose punctures and transverse wrinkles; basal fovea present; striae eight and nine absent, ten complete along margin of epipleuron. Epipleuron with small punctures. Wings. Metathoracic wings greatly reduced. Venter. Prosternum with scattered medium-sized shallow punctures. Mesosternum with scattered large, annulate punctures. Meso-metasternal suture bluntly rounded medially. Metasternum slightly concave medially, moderately narrow anteriorly; disc with minute punctures in anterior third, medium-sized shallow punctures posteriorly; laterally, punctures large, annulate.

Legs. Profemur strongly punctate ventrally. Protibia ( Fig. 84 View Figs ) with medial expansion in apical half; subapical notch broad, shallow; apex strongly lobed medially. Mesofemur and metafemur with small, elongate punctures ventrally. Metatrochanter unmodified. Metatibia slightly angulate, not crenulate; with very small subapical tooth on inner margin. Abdomen. Apical sternite with irregularly spaced, medium-sized, shallow punctures. Pygidium slightly, evenly convex; with medium-sized, shallow punctures separated by about one diameter or more; base with median depression. Male genitalia. Parameres ( Figs. 86–87 View Figs ) with apices truncate, not setose.

Variation. Male: total length 4.5–4.7 mm; greatest width 2.5–2.7 mm. Female: total length 4.6 mm; greatest width 2.6 mm; clypeal teeth more strongly developed; tibiae unmodified; metasternum not concave.

Bionomics. This species has been collected in oak/pine and Liquidamber forest litter, at 1,500 m elevation, during the month of September.

Geographic Distribution ( Fig. 88). This species is known only from the type locality in the Mexican state of Chiapas.
