Material Examined. Thirteen specimens (9 males, 4 females).

Type Material Examined. Holotype: ‘‘ MEXICO / Veracruz / Fortin / S.W. Rio / Metlac ’’ ‘‘34009 / 18.VII.1971 / A. Newton / 292 D.H.’’ ( CMNC) male . Allotype: same data as holotype ( CMNC) female . Paratypes (10): same data as holotype ( CMNC) 5 males, 3 females, ( BDGC) 1 male; ‘‘ Mex. Ver. / Cordoba / Paraje Nuevo / El Nacimiento ’’ ‘‘ 7.VIII.1969 / S.&J. Peck ’’ ‘‘trop[ical] evergreen / forest Ber. 176 / soil and litter / 56 lbs.’’ ( CMNC) 1 male .

Non-type Material Examined. ‘‘ MEX [ICO]: Ver[acruz]: 32509, Fortin SW Rio Metlac , VIII.18.73, A. Newton, 512’’ ( CMNC) 1 male .

Diagnosis. This species is distinguished by the following combination of characters: clypeus strongly produced anteriorly ( Fig. 80), vertical surface with small fovea; pronotal hypomeron carinate; inflexed portion of elytron with basal fovea; metathoracic wings reduced; pygidium strongly convex with median longitudinal swelling; parameres conjointly rounded at apex ( Fig. 82).

Description. Male. Total length 3.8–4.7 mm; greatest width 2.3–2.9 mm. Head. Clypeus strongly produced anteriorly ( Fig. 80). Clypeal teeth moderately developed, moderately separated, weakly reflexed. Clypeal emargination between teeth shallowly rounded; vertical surface deeply V-shaped, with small fovea at bottom of ‘‘V’’. Apical margin of clypeus lateral to teeth strongly convexly arcuate. Disc of clypeus concave, with coarse, shallow, annulate punctures separated by one diameter or less. Clypeogenal suture indicated by obscure depressed line. Gena strongly produced, forming obtuse angle at junction with anterior margin of clypeus. Vertex and gena coarsely, densely punctate. Pronotum. Convex medially, explanate laterally, with posterolateral shallow depressions, with vague median longitudinal depression in posterior half. Anterior angles slightly obtuse. Sides anterior and posterior to lateral angles slightly convex. Posterior angles obtuse, distinct, weakly incised. Pronotal punctures of medium size medially; posteriorly and laterally, punctures large, shallow, annulate. Setae on sides and base strongly arched, fine and nearly recumbent on disc. Pronotal hypomeron convex, with shallow, annulate punctures; longitudinal carina present posterolaterally. Elytra. Moderately convex transversely, strongly convex longitudinally; lateral carinae not strongly elevated. Each elytron dorsally with seven striae, each stria indicated by two wavy lines. Elytral intervals flat; intervals on each side adjacent to strial lines with row of fine punctures bearing conspicuous, arched, yellowish setae. Inflexed portion of elytron broad, evenly narrowed apically, with distinct fovea adjacent to epipleuron; finely punctate, punctures bearing yellowish setae; striae eight and nine absent, ten indicated by row of coarse punctures adjacent to epipleuron. Epipleuron with irregular transverse ridges in basal half. Wings. Metathoracic wings greatly reduced.

Venter. Prosternum with shallow punctures of medium size. Punctures of mesosternum of medium size medially; laterally, punctures large, shallow, annulate. Meso-metasternal suture roundly arched medially. Metasternum slightly convex medially, finely punctate; laterally, punctures large, dense, annulate. Legs. Profemur

!

densely punctate ventrally. Protibia ( Fig. 79) angulate medially, broadened medially in apical half, concave ventrally; weakly notched medially before apex. Mesofemur and metafemur with elongate punctures ventrally. Metatrochanter unmodified. Metatibia strongly angulate, finely crenulate on inner margin; subapical lobe present.

Abdomen. Apical sternite with medium-sized, shallow, annulate punctures. Pygidium very strongly convex, convexity with medial longitudinal swelling, steeply declivous at base; short, broad sulcus at base. Male genitalia. Parameres ( Figs. 81–82) conjointly rounded at apex; apices not setose.

Variation. Female. Total length 4.4–4.5 mm; greatest width 2.5–2.7 mm. Clypeal teeth more strongly developed. Tibiae unmodified.

Bionomics. This species has been collected in dung traps at 1,000 m and from litter of a tropical evergreen forest. It has been taken during the months of July and August.

Geographic Distribution ( Fig. 83). This species occurs in the Mexican state of Veracruz.
