Oplisa japonica Pape & Kurahashi, 1994: 477 View in CoL . Holotype ♂, Aburayama, Fukuoka, 8.X.1988, H. Shima leg. ( BLKU; examined). Type locality: Japan, Kyushu , Fukuoka, Aburayama.

Material examined. Paratypes: JAPAN (Fukuoka): 1 ♀, Mt. Tachibanayama , 16–24.IX.1978 (yellow pan trap), K. Yamagishi leg. ; 1 Ƌ, same data as previous except 25–30.IX.1978 ; 10 ƋƋ, 5 ♀♀, same data as previous except 8– 14.X.1978 ; 2 ƋƋ, 8 ♀♀, same data as previous except 15–21.X.1978 ; 1 ♀, Mt. Inunaki , 19.X.1969, M. Honda leg. Other specimens: JAPAN (Fukuoka) : 3 ♀♀, Mt. Inunaki , 28.X.1995, T. Tachi leg. ; 2 ♀♀, Mt. Sefuri , 13.X.1995, T. Tachi leg. ; 1 Ƌ, Nishi Park , 10.X.1995, T. Tachi leg. ; 1 ♀, same as previous except 25.X.1995 (all in BLKU).

Diagnosis. Body length 3.2–4.2 mm. Wing length: 3.0–4.0 mm. Body ( Fig. 30 View FIGURES 27 – 30 ) grayish brown. Parafacial bare. Antenna with first flagellomere tongue-shaped, about 1/3 as long as eye height; scape, pedicel and basal part of first flagellomere yellowish-orange. Wing ( Fig. 34 View FIGURES 31 – 34 ) brownish hyaline, calypteres whitish yellow; wing veins brown; vein M reaching wing margin or joining vein R4+5 at apex. Halter yellow. Abdomen brown with gray pruinosity on proximal portion of tergites 3–5; sternite 5 ( Fig. 21 View FIGURES 21 – 26 ) bilobed on posterior part, lobes longer than basal part. Male terminalia ( Figs 22–26 View FIGURES 21 – 26 ): surstylus widened in basal 1/ 2 in dorsal view, narrowing in apical 1/2 and curved ventrally at middle, apex rounded in lateral view; bacilliform sclerites fused at middle with 3 projections directed anteriorly, the middle one much smaller; cercus wide over its entire length, with outer margin medially concave in dorsal view; pregonite T-shaped, ventral lobe weakly widened at middle and with some short setae at rounded apex; postgonite straight, rod-shaped, with a long seta at apical 3/4; epiphallus pointed at apex in lateral view, middle part connected to base of basiphallus, pregonite, and hypandrium by membranes; apex of distiphallus trifurcated with a membranous flag dorsally; ejaculatory apodeme distinctly widened at apex.

Distribution. Japan (Honshu, Kyushu) ( Pape & Kurahashi 1994).

Host(s). Unknown.

Remarks. Oplisa Rondani comprises 9 species from the Palaearctic Region Zeegers (2011). Herting (1961) established two subgenera within the genus, Oplisa (as “ Hoplisa ”) and Anoplisa Herting. Zeegers (2011) modified the definition of the subgenera. However, most authors do not use a subgeneric classification for this genus ( Kugler 1978; Pape & Kurahashi 1994; Pape 1998). We follow the latter authors because the subgenera proposed by Herting are not clearly defined.

Oplisa japonica is similar to O. oldenbergi Herting and O. nudiseta Zeegers , but can be distinguished from them by the following combination of characters: short pubescence of arista (strongly plumose in O. oldenbergi ), tergite 3 with lateral marginal setae (a row of marginal setae in O. oldenbergi , these setae indistinct in O. nudiseta ), and syntergite 1+2 without pruinosity (syntergite 1+2 with a pair of small pruinose areas in O. nudiseta ). The morphological differences and phylogenetic relationships of O. japonica with the other species of Oplisa were mentioned in Pape & Kurahashi (1994).
