Stethantyx notaulator Khalaim et Broad , sp. nov.

( Figs 6 View FIGURES 1 – 6 , 39 View FIGURES 36 – 39 )

Comparison. Differs from other Costa Rican species of Stethantyx with black head and flagellum lacking a pale band by the combination of the long ovipositor; notaulus with a strong longitudinal wrinkle ( Fig. 39 View FIGURES 36 – 39 ); strongly raised lateral longitudinal carinae of the scutellum; and the broad, slightly elongate basal area of the propodeum.

Description. Female. Body length about 6.8 mm. Fore wing length 4.7 mm.

Head strongly rounded behind eyes in dorsal view; temple 0.43× as long as eye width. Mandible slender, weakly narrowed basally, upper tooth much longer than lower tooth. Clypeus broad, lenticular, almost flat in lateral view, smooth, with moderately dense punctures on its upper 0.4. Malar space 0.25× as long as basal width of mandible. Flagellum of antenna with 24–26 flagellomeres (26 flagellomeres in holotype), all flagellomeres elongate, flagellomeres 2 and 3 about 1.6× as long as broad. Inner eye orbits weakly convergent ventrally. Face with weak central prominence. Face and frons finely granulate, dull, distinctly and densely punctate. Vertex and temple finely granulate (temple partly almost smooth), with fine, moderately dense punctures.

Notaulus with strong carina extending from anterolateral margin of mesoscutum and with short rather deep groove behind this carina ( Fig. 39 View FIGURES 36 – 39 ). Mesoscutum finely granulate, dull, finely and densely punctate. Scutellum with lateral longitudinal carinae strong, raised, reaching its posterior end and joining posteriorly. Foveate groove of mesopleuron situated in anterior 0.6 of mesopleuron, oblique, deep and crenulate, not reaching anterior margin of mesopleuron. Mesopleuron mostly finely and densely punctate, smooth and shining to very finely granulate and dull between punctures, with impunctate area above foveate groove. Propodeum granulate, dorsolateral area usually very finely punctate, without wrinkles adjacent to carinae. Basal area of propodeum broad, slightly widened anteriorly, almost 1.5× as long as broad and 0.46× as long as apical area. Propodeal spiracle separated from pleural carina by 0.5–1.0× diameter of spiracle. Apical area flat, anteriorly truncate.

Fore wing ( Fig. 6 View FIGURES 1 – 6 ) with veins Rs +2 r and Rs angled about 110°. Vein 2 rs-m about 1.75× as long as abscissa of M between 2 rs-m and 2 m-cu. Hind wing with cu 1& cu-a slightly inclivous or vertical. Hind femur 4.7× as long as broad, 0.87× as long as tibia.

First tergite 3.9× as long as posteriorly broad, smooth, petiole laterally distinctly striate. Glymma situated slightly behind middle of tergite 1, distinct, isolated (without furrow joining to ventral part of postpetiole). Second tergite 1.73× as long as anteriorly broad. Thyridial depression about 3.0× as long as broad. Ovipositor upcurved, with shallow dorsal subapical depression; sheath almost 3.0× as long as first tergite and 3.3× as long as hind tibia.

Head, flagellum of antenna and tergite 1 of metasoma black; scape and pedicel ventrally yellow, dorsally brownish; clypeus brownish yellow, in upper part centrally (between tentorial pits) brown; palpi and mandible (teeth black) whitish. Mesosoma (including tegula) brownish orange, propleuron and anterior margin of pronotum whitish. Fore and mid legs yellowish, coxae and trochanters white, mid femur slightly brownish on its lateral sides. Hind leg with coxa and trochanters predominantly brownish yellow, coxa with dark brown mark ventrolaterally, femur brownish black with extreme base and apex, and dorsal side narrowly yellowish, tibia black, slightly yellowish at apex, and tarsus yellow-brown, infuscate. Pterostigma brownish black. Metasoma behind first tergite yellow ventrally, tergites brownish black dorsally and laterally, with pale mark dorsoposteriorly.

Male. Unknown.

Etymology. Named for its conspicuous notaulus, with a strong carina extending from the anterolateral margin of the mesoscutum.
