Comparison. Differs from other species of Stethantyx by the combination of its black flagellum, orange head (frons and vertex sometimes fuscous centrally) ( Fig. 13 View FIGURES 11 – 15 ), and narrow, anteriorly widened basal area of the propodeum ( Fig. 53 View FIGURES 53 – 55 ). Stethantyx cacaoensis sp. nov. also has a predominantly orange head and similar propodeal areolation but in this species the frons and anterior part of the vertex are blackish and the ovipositor is much longer. Stethantyx limona sp. nov. has similar propodeal areolation but has the head almost entirely black with only the clypeus yellowish orange, a darker hind leg and somewhat longer ovipositor.

Description. Female. Body length about 6.75 mm. Fore wing length 4.65 mm.

Head strongly rounded behind eyes in dorsal view; temple half as long as eye width. Mandible with upper tooth much longer than lower tooth. Clypeus broad, lenticular, flat or very weakly convex in lateral view, mostly smooth, densely punctate on its upper 0.6. Malar space about 0.6× as long as basal width of mandible. Flagellum of antenna usually with 25–31(34) flagellomeres (31 flagellomeres in holotype), all flagellomeres slightly elongate. Inner eye orbits hardly convergent ventrally. Face weakly prominent centrally. Face, frons, vertex and temple finely granulate, dull, densely and mostly indistinctly punctate.

Notaulus as very small inconspicuous tubercle distant from anterolateral margin of mesoscutum, or completely absent ( Fig. 50 View FIGURES 47 – 52 ). Mesoscutum finely granulate, finely and densely punctate. Scutellum with lateral longitudinal carinae extending from its base to about midlength ( Fig. 50 View FIGURES 47 – 52 ). Foveate groove of mesopleuron situated in anterior 0.6 of mesopleuron, oblique, moderately deep, crenulate, not reaching anterior margin of mesopleuron ( Fig. 54 View FIGURES 53 – 55 ). Mesopleuron finely granulate (almost smooth above foveate groove) and finely punctate. Propodeum granulate, dorsolateral area very finely and densely punctate, without wrinkles adjacent to carinae. Basal area of propodeum long and narrow, distinctly widened anteriorly, about half as long as apical area ( Fig. 53 View FIGURES 53 – 55 ), basal longitudinal carinae strong posteriorly but weak or vanishing anteriorly ( Fig. 53 View FIGURES 53 – 55 ). Propodeal spiracle separated from pleural carina by ≤0.5× diameter of spiracle. Apical area flat, anteriorly pointed or narrowly rounded.

Fore wing ( Fig. 10 View FIGURES 7 – 10 ) with veins Rs +2 r and Rs angled about 115°. Vein 2 rs-m 1.7× as long as abscissa of M between 2 rs-m and 2 m-cu. Hind wing with cu 1& cu-a slightly inclivous or vertical. Hind femur 5.5× as long as broad, 0.86× as long as tibia.

First tergite slender, 4.2× as long as posteriorly broad, mostly smooth, with petiole laterally shallowly striate or coriaceous. Glymma situated near middle of tergite 1, small, joining by shallow furrow to ventral part of postpetiole. Second tergite 2.28× as long as anteriorly broad. Thyridial depression more than 4.0× as long as broad. Ovipositor weakly upcurved, with shallow dorsal subapical depression; sheath almost 1.8× as long as first tergite and 1.62× as long as hind tibia.

Head and mesosoma reddish orange; face yellowish orange ( Fig. 13 View FIGURES 11 – 15 ); clypeus, malar space, palpi, mandible (teeth black), propleuron and anterior margin of pronotum yellowish. Antenna black, scape and pedicel ventrally brownish. Tegula fuscous. Pterostigma brown to dark brown. Legs yellowish orange to brownish orange, fore (sometimes also mid) coxa and trochanters whitish. Metasomal segment 1 dark brown, sometimes petiole brownish orange. Metasoma behind tergite 1 yellow ventrally, tergites 2 and 3 dorsally black with narrow yellowish bands posteriorly, tergites 4+ brown with posterior yellowish marks.

Male. Flagellum of antenna with 24–29 segments.

Variation. This species is rather variable in size and sometimes has the frons, vertex and mesosoma dorsally infuscate. The ovipositor sheath varies from 1.4 to 1.9× as long as the first tergite. Two females from Braulio Carrillo National Park have 34-segmented antennal flagella (25–31 flagellomeres in other material); one of them also has an unusually broad basal area of the propodeum and is not included in the type series.

Etymology. Named after the type locality, San José province of Costa Rica.
