Rhipidia (Rhipidia) servilis ( Alexander, 1932) View in CoL

( Figs. 8–20 View FIGURES 8 – 12 View FIGURES 13 – 15 View FIGURES 16 – 18 View FIGURES 19 – 20 )

Limonia (Rhipidia) servilis Alexander, 1932: 248 View in CoL . Type locality: La Lun Mountains, Davao, Mindanao ( Philippines)

Diagnosis. Male antenna with six bipectinate flagellomeres. Prescutum brownish yellow with three stripes; pleuron brownish yellow with a conspicuous brownish black longitudinal stripe. Wing grayish white, all cells with numerous pale gray clouds, costal region with five or six darker areas; Sc1 ending near midlength of Rs; basal section of CuA1 before fork of M. Clasper of gonostylus with four rostral spines.

Description. Male. Body length about 5.2 mm, wing length about 6.0 mm.

Head ( Fig. 9 View FIGURES 8 – 12 ). Dark brownish black, dusted with yellowish white. Hairs on head brown. Antenna about 1.5 mm long. Scape and pedicel brownish black, flagellomeres two to eight pale yellow with basal enlargements and branches brownish black, flagellomeres nine to twelve brownish black. First flagellomere stout; flagellomeres two to seven inclusive with two branches, longest at fourth or fifth flagellomere and nearly one-half longer than corresponding flagellomere; eighth flagellomere with a single branch nearly as long as corresponding flagellomere; flagellomeres nine to eleven enlarged but not pectinate; terminal flagellomere elongate, exceeding penultimate. Proboscis brownish yellow, palpus brownish black, with brown hairs.

Thorax. Generally brownish yellow. Pronotum brownish black. Prescutum brownish yellow with three stripes, median stripe brown, lateral stripes brown with posterior half pale brownish yellow. Scutum brownish yellow, middle area paler, each lobe with pale yellow spot. Scutellum brownish yellow with border brownish black. Mediotergite brownish yellow. Pleuron brownish yellow with a conspicuous brownish black longitudinal stripe extending from cervical region to base of abdomen. Hairs on thorax white. Coxae brownish black; trochanters pale yellow; femora brownish yellow with tips darker; tibiae and tarsi brownish yellow. Hairs on legs brown. Wing ( Fig. 10 View FIGURES 8 – 12 ) grayish white, all cells with numerous pale gray clouds; costal region with five or six darker areas; veins brownish yellow, darker in clouded areas. Venation: Sc1 ending near midlength of Rs, Sc2 near its tip; basal section of CuA1 before fork of M. Halter about 1.1 mm long, pale yellow with knob brownish yellow.

Abdomen. Tergites and sternites brownish yellow. Hairs on abdomen white.

Hypopygium ( Figs. 11–15 View FIGURES 8 – 12 View FIGURES 13 – 15 ). Posterior margin of tergite 9 emarginate. Gonocoxite with single simple ventromesal lobe. Lobe of gonostylus arched at 2/3 length, suddenly narrowed to apical spine. Clasper of gonostylus of moderate size; rostral prolongation relatively long, with four spines placed at apical 1/3. Paramere ( Fig. 12 View FIGURES 8 – 12 ) with mesalapical angle brownish black.

Female. Unknown.

Specimens examined. Holotype male ( USNM), Philippines: Mindanao, Davao district, La Lun Mountains (1676 m), 1930. XII. 31, Clagg. The right antenna, left wing, one leg and hypopygium are mounted on a similarly labeled microscope slide. The right hind leg is still attached to the body, the remaining four are absent. Other material: 8 males ( CAU), Taiwan: Yilan, Yuanshan, Fushan Plant Park (635 m), 2010. XI. 12, Ding Yang.

Distribution. China ( Taiwan); Philippines.

Remarks. This species is recorded from Taiwan for the first time. For description and illustration of this species, also see Alexander (1932). Alexander described the knob of the halter as “dark brown”, whereas it is brownish yellow according to the close examination of the holotype. He described the spines on rostral prolongation as “directed basad at their tips” ( Figs. 17 View FIGURES 16 – 18 , 19–20 View FIGURES 19 – 20 ), whereas the spines on the other rostral prolongation of the holotype are not so curved ( Figs. 16 View FIGURES 16 – 18 , 19–20 View FIGURES 19 – 20 ). Furthermore, the rostral prolongation ( Fig. 11 View FIGURES 8 – 12 ) in the specimen from Taiwan is a little more curved than that in the holotype ( Fig. 17 View FIGURES 16 – 18 ). These differences may be due to some changes of the male hypopygium of the holotype when it is mounted on a microscope slide. The paramere ( Fig. 12 View FIGURES 8 – 12 ) is very similar to that in the holotype ( Fig. 18 View FIGURES 16 – 18 ).
