Trichomanes madagascariense (Bosch) T. Moore (1861: 230) View in CoL .

Cephalomanes madagascariense Bosch (1858: 351 View in CoL , 352). Type:— MADAGASCAR. Without locality, without date, L.H. Boivin s.n. (Herb. de Franqueville).

Terrestrial ferns. Rhizomes short-creeping to sub-erect, 0.4–1.0 cm in diameter, bearing long tufted erect red-brown trichomes, and numerous robust roots. Fronds clustered, erect; stipes 8–10 cm long, wingless and canaliculate, bearing occasional trichomes identical to those present on rhizomes, or concentrated on the stipe bases; rachises slightly winged on their upper part and with similar trichomes as the stipes and rhizomes. Laminae 15–20 × 2–4 cm, oblong or narrowly lanceolate, simply-pinnate, with attenuated apex and truncated to obtuse base, translucent; pinnae 1.0–2.0 × 0.7–1.0 cm, sub-horizontal to slightly oblique, basally sub-opposite then alternate, lanceolate and lobed; lobes more developed and dissected at the base of the frond and of the pinna, multi-veined with a toothed margin; venation pinnate and anadromous. Sori paratactic, on the acroscopic basal-most lobes of pinnae, 0.8–1.0 × 0.5–0.8 mm, usually up to 3 sori per pinna, free, cylindrical to campanulate, truncated or with a slightly dilated mouth; receptacle short to long-exerted.

Distribution and habitat: —Endemic to Madagascar and seems restricted to Masoala peninsula, terrestrial in the understory of the coastal rainforest, at low elevations ( Table 1).

Specimens examined: — MADAGASCAR. Antsiranana: Antalaha, Masoala , February 2001, A. Rasolohery 299 (P00338554) ; Maroansetra , October 2004, G. Rouhan et al. 367 (P00749322) .

Acknowledgments

This work was supported by the ATM MNHN “Biodiversité Actuelle et Fossile” and ATM MNHN “Génomique & Collections”.The molecular work was mostly supported by a JSPS fellowship for Atsushi Ebihara, and partly performed at the “Service de Systématique Moléculaire – UMS 2700” of the MNHN or at the BoEM Lab (ISYEB) for the French team. The field trip in Madagascar for Lucie Bauret was supported by ATM MNHN “Emergence des clades, des biotes et des cultures”, in a program directed by Germinal Rouhan (MNHN). The authors acknowledged the Government of Mauritius (Ministry of Agro-Industry and Food Security) through the National Parks and Conservation Service for permission to access the National Parks, the Forestry Services for permission to collect samples in different parks and nature reserves, and Dr. Cláudia Baider for the useful access to MAU collections. The explorations that resulted in the Seychellois discoveries published here were funded by UNDP-GEF, via a consultancy on the Seychelles Key Biodiversity Areas and a Small Grant Programme (SGP) for the development of the Seychelles National Herbarium. We are also thankful to the Seychelles National Parks Authority for allowing us to work in the forests. The authors would like to thank Annie Tillier, Marie-Catherine Boisselier and Regis Debruyne for the access to the “Service de Systématique Moléculaire” of the MNHN, Germinal Rouhan for molecular works, access to P collections, and fruitful discussion and support, and France Rakotondrainibe (MNHN) for discussion on Hymenophyllaceae diversity and taxonomy in Madagascar.
