Platychauliodes Esben-Petersen, 1924: 155 View in CoL . Type species: Platychauliodes capensis Barnard, 1931: 175 View in CoL , subsequent designation by Barnard, 1931: 175.

Generic characters. Adults. Small to medium-sized (male forewing length 19–26 mm). Body generally brown or blackish brown. Antenna filiform, but subserrate in male of P. capensis View in CoL ( Fig. 7 View FIGURES 7 – 11 ); male antenna longer than 2/3 of forewing, female antenna shorter than 1/2 of forewing. Lateral ocelli ( Figs. 7–8 View FIGURES 7 – 11 ) widely separated. Wings hyaline, with numerous brownish spots along longitudinal veins of forewings. Rs 4 to 6-branched, straightly directing distad; three crossveins between R1 and Rs; M 2-branched; 1A 2-branched, with posterior branch sinuate; 2A 2- branched, both branches sinuate, with anterior branch connected with stem of 1A by a short crossvein; basal r-m of hindwing usually absent, but if present, long, without additional branch connected to M. Male ninth tergum ( Figs. 16 View FIGURES 16 – 23 , 24 View FIGURES 24 – 31 , 32 View FIGURES 32 – 40 ) subquadrate, medially separated into a pair of hemitergites by a longitudinal incision; ninth sternum ( Figs. 17 View FIGURES 16 – 23 , 25 View FIGURES 24 – 31 , 33 View FIGURES 32 – 40 ) subquadrate, posteriorly with a membranous lobe; tenth tergum ( Figs. 16 View FIGURES 16 – 23 , 24 View FIGURES 24 – 31 , 32 View FIGURES 32 – 40 ) short, laterally with strongly inflated round cercus, ventral portion inflated more or less, bearing spinous setae; tenth sternum ( Figs. 20 View FIGURES 16 – 23 , 28 View FIGURES 24 – 31 , 36 View FIGURES 32 – 40 ) with ventral portion tightly connected to ninth sternum by membrane, median plate bifurcated into a pair of lobes with complicate modifications. Anus ( Figs. 19 View FIGURES 16 – 23 , 27 View FIGURES 24 – 31 , 35 View FIGURES 32 – 40 ) slightly sclerotized ventrad, medially with a broadly rectangular or narrowly pointed sclerotized area. Female eighth sternum ( Figs. 23 View FIGURES 16 – 23 , 30 View FIGURES 24 – 31 , 39 View FIGURES 32 – 40 ) broad, posteriorly with a membranous lobe; ninth gonocoxite ( Figs. 22 View FIGURES 16 – 23 , 29 View FIGURES 24 – 31 , 38 View FIGURES 32 – 40 ) foliate without gonostylus; tenth tergum ( Figs. 22 View FIGURES 16 – 23 , 29 View FIGURES 24 – 31 , 38 View FIGURES 32 – 40 ) short, narrow or stout, with ovoid or rounded cercus.

Larvae. Head and prothorax ( Figs. 12–13 View FIGURES 12 – 15 ) blackish brown, smooth, with scattered setae. Antennae ( Fig. 12 View FIGURES 12 – 15 ) with distal two segments combined nearly as long as second segment. Except for distal teeth of mandibles on inner margin, left mandible with one long, acutely pointed tooth and three small teeth, right mandible with one similar long tooth but two small teeth ( Fig. 12 View FIGURES 12 – 15 ).
