Micropagurus McLaughlin, 1986 View in CoL

Diagnosis. Eleven pairs of biserial phyllobranchiate gills. Rostrum as rounded lobe or obsolete. Ocular acicles multispinose. Antennal peduncle with supernumerary segmentation. Crista dentata with 1 accessory tooth. Chelipeds unequal, right larger. Sternite of third pereopods with broad, subrectangular anterior lobe. Sternite of fifth pereopods forming 2 distinct lobes. Fourth pereopods semichelate; propodal rasp with 1–4 rows of corneous scales; no preungual process. Male with coxa of left fifth pereopod somewhat enlarged, with welldeveloped sexual tube, directed toward exterior and tending to coil; right coxa with gonopore and sometimes also with very short extrusion of vas deferens, or without gonopore. Male with third to fifth left pleopods. Female with paired gonopores; no paired first pleopods but with second to fifth left pleopods. Telson without lateral indentations; terminal margin entire. (After McLaughlin 1986, 2003, with slight emendation).

Type species. Micropagurus devaneyi McLaughlin, 1986 View in CoL , by original designation; gender masculine.

Remarks. It has been found that development of a gonopore on the right coxa in males is variable. The right gonopore is present in M. acantholepis , but not present in M. propinquus n. sp., M. devaneyi and M. polynesiensis . In M. spinimanus n. sp., the development of right gonopore varies from totally absent to having a short protrusion of a sexual tube; this is most probably due to growth related differences.
