Annalisella bermudensis Karling, 1978

Known distribution. Various localities on Bermuda (see Karling 1978).

New localities in the Indian Ocean. Zanzibar (Tanzania): Bawi Sandbank (S 6°8’9.6”, E 39°7’50.6”), medium-grained sand, taken from the west side of sandbank, just below waterline (26/11/2004).

New localities outside the Indian Ocean. Curaçao, Piscadera Bay, very clear sand with some detritus from about 10 m deep at buoy nr. 1 of the research centre “CARMABI” (23/12/1998).

Material. The holotype and eight other whole mounts from the original description ( SMNH). One specimen from Curaçao studied alive and mounted. One specimen from Zanzibar photographed and whole mounted (by courtesy of Dr. M. Hooge).

Remarks. A detailed description of the species can be found in Karling (1978). Specimens from the different localities appear to be identical as to internal organisation and morphology of the stylets. Some variation, however, can be found in the dimensions of the stylets. The stylets of the specimen from Zanzibar are the largest, with a prostate stylet type IV of 88 µm long and an accessory stylet type IV of 200 µm long, while those of the specimen of Curaçao are the smallest, measuring 74 µm and 123 µm respectively. The holotype has a prostate stylet 86 µm long, and an accessory stylet type IV 163 µm long, while in the other eight specimens from Bermuda these stylets measure 73 – 86 µm (= 80) and 150 – 174 µm (= 164 µm) respectively.
