Thrips alatus Bhatti View in CoL
( Figs. 1, 8 View FIGURES 1 – 12 , 15 View FIGURES 13 – 25 )
Thrips alatus Bhatti, 1980: 118 View in CoL –120
Female (macropterous): Body yellow, including legs and wings; antennal segments I and II yellow; III brownish yellow; IV–VII dark brown, IV often somewhat lighter proximally; ocellar crescents red; major setae dark. Antennae 7-segmented, III–IV with sensorium forked. Head wider than long, ocellar setae pair III small and arising just outside ocellar triangle as in palmi ; postocular setae II&IV minute ( Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1 – 12 ). Pronotum wider than long, with two pairs of long posteroangular setae; posterior margin with three pairs of setae; pronotal chaetotaxy as in palmi . Lines of sculpture on the metascutum not converging mesad posteriorly; median setae long, arising behind anterior margin; paired campaniform sensilla present ( Fig. 8 View FIGURES 1 – 12 ). Fore wing first vein with three setae on distal half; second vein with row of about 13 setae; clavus with five marginal setae. Abdominal tergum II with four lateral marginal setae; comb on tergite VIII complete with fine microtrichia ( Fig. 15 View FIGURES 13 – 25 ); tergite X split longitudinally except at base. Pleurotergites and sternites without discal setae.
Male: As yellow as female but smaller; comb on abdominal tergite VIII posterior margin absent; sternites III– VII with broadly oval pore plates.
Specimens examined. China: Yunnan, 10 females, 5 males, on Zea mays , 18.vii.2009; Yunnan, 6 females, 2 males, on Trifolium repens , 19.vii.2009; Guizhou, 4 females, on Rumex flower ( Polygonaceae ), 29.iv.2009.
Remarks. This species is closely similar to palmi . It appears to be the Himalayan counterpart of that species which occurs widely across India, south of the Himalayas and across Southeast Asia. The metanotal sculpture differs slightly between these two, as indicated in the key. The European species alni Uzel is also close to alatus , but has longer posteroangular pronotal setae, and the male has pore plates only on sternites III–VI.
