( Figs. 4, 11 View FIGURES 1 – 12 , 18, 23 View FIGURES 13 – 25 )
Thrips garuda Bhatti, 1980: 137 View in CoL
Female (macropterous): Body yellow, with obvious brown markings as follows: pronotum at middle, mesonotum on sides, metanotum except a median yellow longitudinal line, meso and metapleura, abdominal tergum I almost completely except along posterior margin, II medially, III–VII medially in anterior half or somewhat more ( Fig. 23 View FIGURES 13 – 25 ). Antennal segements II–VIII dark brown, III somewhat lighter, III pale yellow. Fore wing clavus dark. Legs yellow. Ocellar crescent red. Major setae dark. Antennae 7-segmented, III–IV with sensorium forked. Head wider than long, ocellar setae pair III small and arising just outside ocellar triangle; postocular setae pairs II & IV reduced ( Fig. 4 View FIGURES 1 – 12 ). Pronotum wider than long, with two pairs of long posteroangular setae; posterior margin with three pairs of setae. Metanotal sculpture of widely spaced longitudinal lines; median setae long, arising behind anterior margin; paired campaniform sensilla absent ( Fig. 11 View FIGURES 1 – 12 ). Fore wing first vein with three setae on distal half; second vein with row of about 12 setae; clavus with 5–6 marginal setae. Abdominal tergites without sculpture medially; tergite II with three lateral marginal setae; tergite VIII posteromarginal with comb complete, of fine closely spaced microtrichia ( Fig. 18 View FIGURES 13 – 25 ); tergite X split longitudinally except at base. Abdominal pleurotergites and sternites without discal setae.
Male: Unknown.
Specimens examined. China: Guangxi, 4 females, on grass ( Poaceae ), 20.iii.2009; Guizhou, 2 females, on Verbena officinalis , 8.iv.2009.
Remarks. This species was described from India, and according to Bhatti (1980) it shares many character states with the Indian species dorax that remains known only from a single female. However, it differs in having the posteromarginal comb on abdominal tergite VIII with fine and closely spaced microtrichia.
