Type material. Holotype GoogleMaps , ♂ (UKHI). Label: “ Costa Rica: Heredia, E.B. LaSelva, 50–150m, 10°26’N 84°01’W, 17.xi.1998, L/07/512 SOR 750m INBio-OET”

Description of holotype, ♀. Body length: 2.0 mm; fore wing length: 1.6 mm.

Color. Head orangish brown, palpi white. Mesosoma dark reddish brown dorsally, pronotum and propleuron orangish brown, mesopleuron and metapleuron black. Metasoma whitish with base of T1, lateral of T2+3 and remaining terga dorsally orangish brown. Antenna brown, scape and pedicel light yellow. Fore leg whitish yellow except tibia pale brown and tarsomere 5 brown. Mid leg whitish yellow except femur pale yellow. Hind leg with coxa light orange at base, gradually lightening toward whitish yellow apex; trochanter whitish yellow and trochantellus pale yellow; femur and tibia orangish brown, darker near junction; basitarsus dark brown, remainder tarsi whitish yellow, claws brown. Wings faintly banded and weakly infuscate; veins light brown, stigma brown with base white.

Head. Length of head in dorsal view 0.57× its width. Antennae 1.1× as long as body; scape 2.5× longer than wide; subapical flagellomeres distinctly expanded ventrally, about as long as wide. Eye height 4.0× longer than malar space. Frons and vertex finely areolate-rugulose, temples and gena punctate; face weakly rugose-striate; head covered with dense white setae.

Mesosoma. Mesoscutum and scutellum strongly and densely punctate. Notauli absent. Scutellar sulcus deep and narrow, with about 12 divisions. Mesoscutellar trough and metanotum costate. Pronotum smooth and polished with distinct crenulate ventral groove. Sternaulus deep and narrow, extending over most of mesopleuron, sinuate and crenulate. Mesopleuron mostly smooth, punctate anteriorly; mostly densely setose but bare dorsally; subalar groove deep and wide, not crenulate. Propodeum with large, roughly pentagonal areola extending over most of its length; transverse carina present laterally but interrupted at areola; rugose anteriorly and smooth posteriorly. Metapleuron rugose-costate.

Wings. Fore wing vein r absent, veins 2RS and 3RSa directly connected with stigma, vein r&RS 1.6× stigma height; vein R1 0.7× stigma length; stigma 2.8× longer than high.

Legs. Hind tibial spurs 0.33× the hind tibia length. All legs smooth. Mid coxa with transverse sulcus dorsally. Hind tibia enlarged apically, narrower than hind femur, 4.5× longer than maximum width

Metasoma. All terga smooth, central area of T1–3 apparently weakly sclerotized compared to base of T1 and lateral T1–3. Mid basal sulcus on T1 wide and shallow.

Male. Unknown.

Diagnosis. Fore wing vein r absent, veins 2RS and 3RSa directly merging into stigma, vein r&RS and R1 long; body mostly dark colored and wings faintly banded; scutellum mostly smooth and glabrous; propodeum with distinct, roughly pentagonal areola extending over most of its length, transverse carina distinct but interrupted at areola. This new species resembles A. bolivariensis sp. n. and A. panamensis sp. n. in having a complete areola on propodeum, which extends over most of its length. Adelius pentagonalis sp. n. differs from A. bolivariensis in having distinctly banded wings, as contrasting with hyaline wings in A. bolivariensis . It differs from A. panamensis in its rugose-costate metapleuron and imbricate gena, as contrasting with both being smooth in A. panamensis . This new species is also distinct in having the fore wing veins r&RS and R1 very long. The vein r&RS is 1.65× longer than the stigma height, as compared to less than 1.2× in all other species of Adelius from New World.

Biology. Unknown.

Distribution: Known only from Heredia Province, Costa Rica.

Etymology. The name of this new species is a reference to the pentagonal shape of its propodeal areola.
