Kupiuka extratheca View in CoL sp. nov.

Figs 1–7 View FIGURES 1 – 7

Type material: Holotype: male from Reserva Florestal Adolpho Ducke, Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil [2°57’S, 59°55’W], 3 May 1996, E. Camillo ( INPA). Paratypes: 1 male and 1 female, same locality as holotype, 2 September 1995, E. Camillo ( IBSP 158614, INPA).

Etymology. The specific name is a combination of “extra” and “theca” and refers to the development of the glandular area on the wall of the copulation duct of the epigyne ( Fig 7 View FIGURES 1 – 7 ). Noun in apposition.

Diagnosis. The species seems to be closely related to K. murici sp. nov., with which it shares a retrolateral apophysis on the male palpal femur ( Figs 4 View FIGURES 1 – 7 , 10 View FIGURES 8 – 11 ), but can be distinguished from that species by having a short, stout RTA in the male palp ( Fig. 3 View FIGURES 1 – 7 ). The female of K. extratheca sp. nov. resembles that of K. heteropicta sp. nov. by the long copulation ducts and bulbous extra spermathecae, but can be distinguished by the copulation openings, which are not connected posteriorly by a rim ( Fig. 6 View FIGURES 1 – 7 ).

Description. Male holotype: Total length: 3.05. Carapace dark brown, 1.37 long, 0.87 wide, 0.55 high, with a narrow stripe of white scales along the borders; a short, narrow, median, longitudinal stripe of white scales behind the fovea and transverse stripes of white scales extending from behind the posterior eyes to the borders of the carapace over the coxae II. Ocular quadrangle black, 0.70 long. Anterior eye row 0.80 wide and posterior 0.77 wide. Clypeus very narrow, covered with white scales. Chelicera dark brown. Endite light brown, rounded, slightly projected laterally. Labium and sternum light brown. Palp light brown, with a retrolateral apophysis on the distal femur, stout and short RTA, rounded tegulum and slightly long, thick embolus ( Figs 2–5 View FIGURES 1 – 7 ). Legs 4132; I light brown, II–IV yellow; I–IV laterally dark brown. Length of femur: I 0.62, II 0.55, III 0.62, IV 0.75; patella + tibia: I 0.90, II 0.65, III 0.72, IV 0.90; metatarsus + tarsus: I 0.55, II 0.50, III 0.70, IV 0.75. Spination: femur I d1-1-1, II d1-1-1, p1di, III=IV d1-1-1, r1di; tibia I v1 r-2-1p, II 1 r- 1r-0, III=IV v1 rdi; metatarsus I=II v2-2, III p1di, r1di, v2 di, IV p1di, r1di, v1 di. Abdomen dark brown, dorsally with three pairs of lateral light areas and a median over the anal tubercle ( Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1 – 7 ); ventrally dark brown. Spinnerets dark brown.

Female paratype: Total length: 2.45. Coloration as in male. Carapace 1.25 long, 0.77 wide, 0.42 high. Ocular quadrangle 0.70 long. Anterior eye row 0.77 wide and posterior 0.77 wide. Palp yellow. Legs 4312. Length of femur: I 0.52, II 0.45, III 0.55, IV 0.85; patella + tibia: I 0.65, II 0.50, III 0.60, IV 0.85; metatarsus + tarsus: I 0.50, II 0.42, III 0.62, IV 0.75. Spination: femur I=II=III d1-1-1, IV d1-1-0; tibia I v1 r-2-1p, II v1 r- 1r-0, III=IV 0; metatarsus I=II v2-2, III=IV r1di, v1 di. Abdomen as in male, ventrally yellow. Epigyne with posterior openings, long copulation ducts, bulbous extra spermathecae and true spermathecae not differentiated in girth ( Figs 6–7 View FIGURES 1 – 7 ). Spinnerets light brown.
