( Figs. 35–38 View FIGURES 35 – 38 ).

Pelecorhynchus penai Pechuman, 1967: 554 . Type locality: Chile, Araucanía. Type: ♀ Cornell University.

Material examined. Región de La Araucanía: 1 ♀ Malleco, Malalcahuello 8.I.2000 col. G. Aceituno.

Diagnosis and comments. Body color light brown. Scutum with two parallel longitudinal whitish stripes, reaching scutellum. Scutellum brown with longitudinal yellowish stripes and long golden hairs on the distal margin. Pleura with abundant long golden hairs. Wing hyaline, darker along the costal margin. Abdomen with short golden hairs; tergite 1 with a pair of whitish spots in the corner of the segment; tergites 2, 3, and 4 with a pair of rectangular yellowish spots reaching the lateral margin ( Fig. 35 View FIGURES 35 – 38 ). This species is similar to P. kroeberi in sharing the presence of lateral white spots on tergite 1, but is distinguished from it and other species of Pelecorhynchus by having the body color light brown. It is also smaller in size than other species in the genus and has parallel white stripes on the scutellum.

Description. Female (N = 1; length: 13.0 mm). Head: eyes dark brown without pattern when dry, bare. Frons with dark brown pruinosity and long black hairs, parallel-sided. Parafacial with gray pruinosity and short black pilosity. Ocellar triangle with three ocelli. Clypeus convex with long yellowish hairs. Gena with gray pruinosity and abundant long yellowish hairs continuous with those of the occiput; beard white-yellowish ( Fig. 36 View FIGURES 35 – 38 ). Scape and pedicel with brown pruinosity and black and yellow hairs at apex; first flagellomere slightly flattened at base. Maxillary palpus dark brown with long yellowish hairs. Proboscis and labellum dark brown.

Thorax: scutum brown with two parallel longitudinal whitish stripes reaching scutellum. Scutellum brown with longitudinal yellowish stripes and long golden hairs on distal margin ( Fig. 37 View FIGURES 35 – 38 ). Pleura with abundant long golden hairs. Legs brown, coxa gray. Wing hyaline darker along the costal margin.

Abdomen: brown dorsally with sparse short golden hairs; tergite 1 with a pair of whitish spots in the anterior corner of the segment; tergites 2, 3 and 4 with a pair of rectangular yellowish spots reaching the lateral margin ( Fig. 38 View FIGURES 35 – 38 ). Sternites light brown with golden hairs, without yellowish spots.

Male. The description of the male is taken from the original description given by Pechuman (1967). The male differs from the female in having the upper portion of the gena more densely haired and the hairs longer, more black hairs on the clypeus, the pale thoracic stripes do not clearly cross to the scutellum (so the entire scutellum is essentially dark), and the hairs of the thorax and abdomen are longer. Terminalia not dissected.

Geographic distribution. Chile (Región de La Araucanía) ( Fig. 39 View FIGURE 39 ).
