Ropalomera goyana Prado, 1966 View in CoL

Rhopalomera goyana Prado, 1966: 215 View in CoL , 227–229 (key, figs. 36–41).

Ropalomera goyana View in CoL ; Steyskal, 1967: 3 (catalogue); Prado & Papavero, 2009: 4 (catalogue).

Holotype male. Body: 9.3 mm; wing: 8.9 mm

Head: Frons yellow with thin yellowish pilosity, two spots of silver pollinosity between postocellar bristles and vertical inner bristle; eye circumference with silver pollinosity. Ocellar tubercle dark brown, shiny and with pair of fine bristles. Postocellar bristles divergent. Postocular bristles present. Antenna with dark-brown scape, very short; pedicel dark brown, twice the size of the scape and with hairs on anterior margin and one dorsal short bristle; flagellomere orange and dark on anterior surface; arista plumose with long hairs, dark brown with basal third orange. Gena broad, yellow, covered with silver pollinosity and slender golden bristles, which are short dorsally and longer ventrally. Parafacialia dark brown, with red pilosity and three distinct bristles. Face brown, matte, with globose facial tubercle. Clypeus brown. Palpus dark-brown with long dark-brown setae ventrally.

Thorax: Scutum brown with acrostichal and dorsocentral stripes of pale-golden pollinosity. Scutellum trapezoid, dorsal surface concave rounded posteriorly, bright and without pollinosity, side of basal half with pale-golden pollinosity. Mesopleuron with stripe of silver pollinosity extending to the anepisternum. Chaetotaxy: one postpronotal, two notopleural, one presutural supra-alar weakly developed, one postsutural supra-alar, one postalar, one intra-alar, one intra-postalar, one acrostichal and one dorsocentral weakly developed; two strong scutellar bristles, with one apical and one laterally on the middle of scutellum. Mesopleuron with one strong bristle on anepisternum, one on katepisternum and one distinct seta on posterior margin of posterior spiracle.

Legs: Coxae with silver pollinosity. Femora dark brown with fine pilosity. Fore femur with thin bristles, not longer than diameter of femur; midline of ventral surface with golden bristles; posteroventral surface bare basally. Mid femur with sparse silver pollinosity; basal half of ventral surface with long, thin golden bristles; anteroventral surface with nine spine-like setae that decrease in size toward the apex; one preapical and two apical setae on dorsal surface, all strong and curved. Hind femur thicker than the others, with golden pollinosity on dorsal surface; distal half with six strong bristles; anterior surface with three non-aligned bristles; apical half with two series of three spine-like bristles on ventral surface, one anteroventral and another posteroventral. Fore and mid tibiae thinner than hind tibia. Fore tibia with distal third and dorsal surface yellowish, with dense golden pilosity on anteroventral surface, one strong dorsal apical bristle. Mid tibia with distal half of ventral surface with long pilosity and two apical spine-like setae; dorsal surface with one strong bristle on distal half. Hind tibia thicker in middle region; pilosity not longer than largest diameter of tibia, except bristles distributed on dorsal surface; apex with dense, thin golden pilosity ventrally. Tarsi with first two tarsomeres yellowish on dorsal surface, other tarsomeres brown with dense golden pilosity ventrally.

Wing: Infuscated, more infuscated around cross-vein r-m ( Fig. 61 View FIGURES 57 – 64 ).

Abdomen: With dark-brown tergites, each tergite with four silver spots of pollinosity (giving chessboard appearance). Sternite 5 with sides broadly rounded and middle region weakly sclerotized; few bristles present, with lateral bristles longer ( Fig. 29 View FIGURES 29 – 35 ). Terminalia: cerci longer than surstylus, with bristles no longer than basal width of cerci ( Figs. 30, 31 View FIGURES 29 – 35 ). Surstylus broader at base than at apex, apical two-thirds with flattened region ( Fig. 32 View FIGURES 29 – 35 ). Parameres trilobed; middle region, including preapical lobe, thinner ( Fig. 33 View FIGURES 29 – 35 ). Aedeagus sclerotized on basal half and middle of apex, without preapical spine-like projections ( Figs. 34, 35 View FIGURES 29 – 35 ). Epiphallus slightly curved and with apical region rounded, without lateral branches ( Figs. 34, 35 View FIGURES 29 – 35 ).

Type material. Holotype male ( FIOC), labeled: [ BRAZIL], Goyas, Campinas [now in state of Tocantins], Spitz, 5[v]–[19]38/ 3/ (circular red label)/ Ropalomera goyana Det. Â [ngelo] P[ires] [do] Prado.

Condition of type: All abdomens previously dissected by Prado (1966). In subsequent years the abdomens were lost. Remain of the body in good condition.

Material additional examined. BRASIL, Amazonas, Manaus, Reserva Adolpho Ducke, Arm. McPhail, área aberta, baixio, 21.ii.2003, A. P. Tregue-Costa, 3 ( INPA); same but, área aberta, platô, Armadilha McPhail Modificada, 29.v. 2003, 5m, 9 3; 6.vi. 2003, 5m; 25m; 24.vi. 2003, 15m; 29.vi. 2003, 25m; 7.viii. 2003, 15m (all INPA); same but, Sede, 25m, melado de cana 10%, 3; same but, 15.viii. 2003, 25m, 3 (all INPA); Itacoatiara, vi– viii.[19]99, Arm. McPhail, B. Ronchi-Teles, 3 ( INPA).

Geographical distribution. Brazil (Amazonas, Goiás).

Variations. This species varies only in size, from 8.0 to 9.5 mm.

Discussion. This is the first record of this species for the Amazon region; it was previously recorded only for the Brazilian state of Tocantins. It resembles Ropalomera femorata and R. albifaciata with respect to size and the color pattern of the thorax and abdomen, but they differ regarding sternite 5, the aedeagus, the parameres and the epiphallus. The main diagnostic character is sternite 5, which in R. goyana has no spine-like bristles distally.
