Description

Shell up to 16 Ö 6.2 mm with 8 to 9.5 quite rounded whorls. Early whorls with a peripheral angle which may be concealed by the suture or slightly apparent next to it; body whorl slightly constricted, usually with a slight peripheral angle in prolongation of the suture. Sculpture very weak, wrinkled, on the ®rst embryonic half whorl, then with broad, indistinct ribs on the next half-whorl grading to more de®nite and more crowded (20±25/mm) ribs on the second whorl. Spire whorls with quite strong and irregular ribs (7±10 ribs/mm) on third to ®fth whorls, then with ribs becoming gradually more crowded (up to 12 ribs/mm) on the penultimate and body whorl; ribs hardly or not at all thickened at their termination along the suture.

Aperture thickened and expanded into a collar, with a distinct rim inside the outer lip. Peristome distinctly auriculated, abruptly narrowing at the columellar insertion, moderately auriculated at the parietal insertion.

Shell colour with a brown to greyish brown background, over which some whitish segments of the ribs may give an ashy tone. Patterns composed by the whitish tone on the ribs, making a series of irregular subsutural blotches, one or two blurred bands at the periphery of whorls, and one peri-umbilical band. Peristome white.

Female genitalia as in general description, but with a rather small ovary occupying only one and one half whorl in the apical part of the spire. Male genitalia with a penis ¯attened on one side, of rather constant breadth except for the distal part which is tapering; otherwise like in general description.

Geographic range and variation

This species is found in the Spanish provinces of Barcelona, Gerona and Lerida, the easternmost occurrence being in the valley of the Esera at Campo, province of Huesca. One Pyrenean population (La Preste, PyreÂneÂes-Orientales) is in France. There are isolated populations in the Spanish provinces of Tarragona ( Vilella, 1958) and CastelloÂn.

There is a discrete geographic variation, both morphological and allozymic, among populations recognized as C. martorelli . Levels of polymorphism in any particular population are very low. Among the ten populations analysed, only one had three polymorphic loci, four others one single polymorphic locus, and in the other ®ve a single allele was ®xed in each of the 16 loci examined. Thus, structuration is high but the diOEerences are interpreted in terms of a single polytypic species rather because of the lack of consistent morphological diOEerences which would support taxonomic recognition of the diOEerences. A diOEerent course has been taken with the population in the valley of Rio Cinca where Gofas and Backeljau (1994) recognized C. gigas as a separate species both because allozymic diOEerences are more important and because they are corroborated by morphological criteria.

Several units can be recognized in the south Pyrenean area and may be given subspeci®c status:
