Included species

Micronycteris (L.) brosseti ( Porter et al., 2007) and M. (L.) schmidtorum (Table 1).

Emended diagnosis

Small in overall size (weight 4.3–8 g; forearm 31.5–37 mm). Pinnae connected by a low-to-intermediate interauricular membrane with a shallow to moderately deep notch at the midline. Ventral fur is paler than dorsal fur(gray or buff,never white).Second phalanx of wing digit IV is shorter than first. Mastoid breadth is shorter than ZB (Appendix 1). Cranium is tall in lateral view, 30–35° in relation to the rostrum. Lower incisors are hypsodont or brachydont. In lateral view, P3 and P4 are equal or similar in size, with P3 slightly shorter than P4; and p2 and p4 are subequal, with p3 slightly smaller (p2≈p4> p3). Coronoid process is high, and the upper margin of the ascending process has a steep slope (25–30°). Emended diagnosis based on Sanborn (1935), Simmons and Voss (1998), and Porter et al. (2007). Karyotype was described for M. schmidtorum and has 2n = 38 and FN = 66 ( Baker, 1979).

Comments

Description of the subgenus Leuconycteris by Porter et al. (2007) did not include M. schmidtorum . Leuconycteris is sister to the subgenus Micronycteris , which includes all the small (FA <39.5 mm) dark-bellied members of the genus.
