Carchesiopygus dentipennis Schedl, 1964: 246 View in CoL .

Taxonomy. This species was previously known only from the male holotype (NMW). We have examined this, and a second specimen from Australia (see below). The female is unknown. The generic position of this species is not certain. The metasternal-metepisternal impression has a carina anteriorly which extends across both sclerites. This is absent in Carchesiopygus View in CoL (see above). It is also excluded from Carchesiopygus View in CoL because the pronotal emarginations are carinate both anteriorly and posteriorly, and the basal margin of the pronotum is wider than the anterior margin, the metacoxae are large and strongly projecting, and the fourth ventrite lacks spines. It is excluded from Crossotarsus View in CoL because the labial palpi are 3- not 2-segmented. It does not run satisfactorily to any of the genera in Wood’s (1993) key, nor to the genus Pereioplatypus Beaver (2007). The species is here included temporarily in the genus Platypus View in CoL , as an exception to Wood’s (1993) statement that the anterior margin of the metasternal-metepisternal impression is never carinate in that genus. The other characters of the species would not exclude it from that genus, but it may eventually have to be placed in a new genus, together with a second undescribed, but apparently related, species from Australia. Further specimens (including females) are needed.

Distribution. Australia (Queensland).

New record. [ AUSTRALIA], NE Qld, Daintree, Thompson Creek, 16o06.31'S, 145o26.25'E, 140m, trunk FIT, 19.xii.1998 – 26.i.1999 (S. Grove) (1♂).
