Leporinus amae Godoy 1980: 23 View in CoL , fig. 14.

Holotype: MHNP no exclusive number (see Remarks), 121.9 mm SL ( Figure 1a View FIGURE 1 ): Brazil, Rio Grande do Sul, Marcelino Ramos, Apuaé (or Ligeiro) River , tributary of Uruguay River , ~ 27°31′49″S, 51°51′31″W, ~ 380m asl, 14 Apr 1980. GoogleMaps

Paratype: MHNP no exclusive number (see Remarks), 85.5 mm SL ( Figure 1b View FIGURE 1 ): collected with the holotype .

Remarks. Godoy (1980: 26) stated that “(...) the type and a syntype (...)” were deposited in MHNP. The “type” was interpreted by Garavello & Britski (2003) as the holotype and, consequently, the syntype was considered to be paratype. Both specimens share the catalog number MHNP 202 and are in the same jar, which includes a label stating unequivocally their type status.

Professor Godoy stated in his register book (catalog): “ typus—exemplar menor ” [type—smaller specimen] and “ syntypus —exemplar maior ” [syntype —larger specimen]. Conversely, in the original description Godoy (1980: 25) stated that the holotype (“ exemplar tipo ”, in the original) was 128 mm SL, which approximates our measurement of the larger specimen (122 mm SL vs. 85 mm SL in the smaller specimen). Therefore, it is clear that the larger specimen is the holotype.

Godoy (1980: 26) stated that “(...) the described species is known only from Apuaê or Ligeiro River, affluent of Pelotas River”. The only river known as Apuaé (or Apuaê) or Ligeiro, with its month between Machadinho Dam (upstream) and Itá Dam (downstream) and near the city of Marcelino Ramos [three localities provided in Godoy (1980)], is a direct tributary of the Uruguay River, not the Pelotas River.
