Paduniella sona , new species

Figs 13–15 View FIGURES 13 – 15

Paduniella sona has inferior appendages that resemble those of P. africana and P. ankya , but it differs by having short, dorsad oriented dorsal arms of sternite IX.

Male genitalia ( Figs 13–15 View FIGURES 13 – 15 ). Sternite IX very wide in lateral view; both ventral arms almost triangular with slightly convex margins, about as long as wide, about 0.1 mm long; without process at posterior margin; both dorsal arms narrowing strongly dorsad, nearly needle-shaped at apex, slightly curving anterad along entire length, joined with tergite IX at dorsal part of genitalia, less than 0.1 mm long. Tergite IX long, smooth, dorsal margin nearly straight before bending slightly ventrad at distal two-thirds, ventral margin irregularly undulating; apex completely fused with superior appendages. Superior appendages completely fused with apex of tergite IX; tapering apically, with weakly undulating ventral margin and nearly straight dorsal margin, about half as wide as widest part of sternite IX; setae present at apices; apex pointing ventrad. Superior appendages completely fused with apex of tergite IX; tapering apically, with concave ventral margin and convex dorsal margin, about as wide as widest part of sternite IX; setae present along entire length; apex pointed. Median branch of inferior appendages with apex visible in lateral view; straight, with rounded apex; originating shortly before mid-length on main branch in ventral view; tapering, pointing posteromesad; apex simple; less than 0.10 mm long. Ventral lobe of inferior appendages absent. Main branch of inferior appendages about 0.25 mm long, slightly curved ventrad, narrowing to mid-length; proximal part 2 times wider than widest part of superior appendages in lateral view; distal one-third narrowly rectangular, straight. Phallic apparatus reduced, comprising two long, slender processes of uncertain homology; dorsal process 0.45 mm, curving along its length, except bending posterad at distal five-sixth its length; ventral process 0.3 mm, running nearly parallel with dorsal branch, curving ventrad along its length. Sternal strips not visible. Phallobase short.

Holotype male, Mahitsy, Chutes de Faharantsana, ix.1954 [R. Paulian] ( MNHN, alcohol).

Paratype: Same data as holotype, 1 male ( MNHN, alcohol).

Distribution. Madagascar (Province Antanarivo).

Etymology. The name, sona , is a derivation of sana, the four last letters in Faharantsana, the type locality.
