Paduniella nandra , new species

Figs 4–6 View FIGURES 4 – 6

The genitalia of P. nandra resemble those of P. ankya and P. filamentosa in lateral view in the presence of a broad ventral branch of the inferior appendages. It is distinguished from the two species by possessing a tapering main branch of the inferior appendages in lateral view.

Male genitalia ( Figs 4–6 View FIGURES 4 – 6 ). Sternite IX narrowly club-shaped in lateral view; both ventral arms with almost straight anterior and posterior margin, 3 times longer than wide, nearly 0.2 mm long; without swelling at posterior apex; both dorsal arms narrow, needle-shaped, slightly S-shaped, oriented anterad before curving dorsad, joined with tergite IX at mid-dorsal part of genitalia, about 0.35 mm long. Ventral and dorsal arms forming right angle. Tergite IX long, wide, smooth; slightly narrowing distad in lateral view; dorsal and ventral margins nearly straight; nearly 0.45 mm long. Superior appendages originating ventroapically on tergite IX; margins parallel, about half as wide as widest part of sternite IX; straight; setae apparently restricted to distal half; apex rounded. Median branch of inferior appendages invisible in lateral view; originating about at mid-length of main branch in ventral view; widening from base into bilobed apex; mesal apical lobe narrow, lateral apical lobe wide; covered by setae, especially along mesal margin; about 0.1 mm long. Ventral lobe of inferior appendages forming rounded lobe in lateral view; forming pair of about 0.1 mm long tapering processes covered by setae in ventral view. Main branch of inferior appendages narrowing stepwise apically in lateral view; proximal part about as wide as tergite IX in lateral view; distal one-fourth about as wide as superior appendages in lateral view; generally curving slightly ventrad along entire length; about 0.35 mm long. Phallic apparatus connected to sternite IX and tergite IX by long, straight, dorsally narrowing sternal strips; sternal strip with convex anterodorsal margin and nearly straight posteroventral margin, about 0.25 mm long. Phallobase short, rectangular. Median processes more than 0.6 mm long; needleshaped, with row of dorsal teeth before apex; bow-shaped in lateral view; apex not exceeding phallicata. Phallicata about 0.5 mm long; proximal one-third uniformly slender, straight; double as wide at mid-length, widening toward ventrally curved apex, with concave ventral margin, dorsal margin undulating. Paramere separated from phallicata well posterior of phallobase; very thin, straight along its length, except curving at apex; running parallel with proximal part of phallicata, exceeding phallicata; about 0.55 mm long.

Holotype male, Namoroka, Vilanandro, ix.1952 [R. Paulian] ( MNHN, alcohol).

Paratypes: Same data as holotype, 2 females ( MNHN, alcohol), 1 male ( NHRS, alcohol).

Distribution. Madagascar (Province Mahajanga).

Etymology. The name, nandra , is derived from Vilanandro, the type locality.
