Ambrosiophilus restrictus ( Schedl, 1939 )
status

comb. nov.

Ambrosiophilus restrictus ( Schedl, 1939) comb. n.

Compared to the lectotype in NHMW.

Diagnosis: Robust body shape, antenna notably large, yellow, of type 4 (with the first segment small and convex). Elytral declivity steep, flat, with elevated posterolateral carina, striae 1 impressed, interstriae 1, 2 without major tubercles, except a pair of blunt tubercles on upper part of interstria 2, two pairs of robust tubercles on interstria 3, smaller ones on 4 and 5, in rows, wide flat spaces between them. Individuals from New Guinea often have iridescent surface of declivity and reduced size of declivital tubercles compared to SE Asian specimens.

Length: 2.0– 2.6 mm.

Discussion. Representatives collected in Borneo are larger and have larger declivital denticles than New Guinean representatives from lowlands, but are nearly identical to those from NG highlands. Specimens identified as Xyleborus cristatulus by Cox at FRC Sabah, Malaysia, fall within the variation span of A. restrictus . However, the holotype was not examined.

Biology: Often accompanies Bornean Beaverium spp., mostly B. latus , in order to take advantage of the established ambrosia fungus gardens (Hulcr, unpubl.).

Examined material: Indonesia, Java, Batoerrad (lectotype, NHMW); Malaysia, Sabah, Danum Valley (18) J. Hulcr 2006; New Guinea, Wisselmeren Enarotadi, (BBM).
