Note: Pleroma magdalenense ( Figures 7 View FIGURE 7 and 8 View FIGURE 8 ) was indicated as a synonym of Pleroma heteromallum (D. Don 1822: t. 644) D. Don (1823: 295) in Guimarães et al. (2019), but both are certainly distinct taxa, differing by its cylindrical branches in the former (vs. angular in P. heteromallum ), slightly discolorous leaves (vs. strongly discolorous), oblong and costate fruits (vs. globose and ecostate). Pleroma magdalenense is endemic to the state of Rio de Janeiro, and it has been collected in the municipalities of São Fidélis and Santa Maria Madalena (approximately 45 km apart), in the surroundings of the “Parque Estadual do Desengano”, always in vegetation associated to granitic inselbergs. On the other hand, Pleroma heteromallum seems to be restricted to the state of Minas Gerais, occurring in several municipalities along the Espinhaço Range, in “cerrado” and “campos rupestres”. Since this species was considered a synonym of P. heteromallum , it was not transferred to Pleroma ( Guimarães et al. 2019) , and that’s why we provide the new combination here.
